    • In a time division multiple access (TDMA) radiotelephone communications system, a spread spectrum random access channel signal representing a random access message is communicated from a radiotelephone to a central station according to a spreading sequence. In response, a TDMA radiotelephone communications channel is assigned to the radiotelephone. A time division multiplexed radiotelephone communications signal is communicated between the radiotelephone and the central station on the assigned TDMA radiotelephone communications channel over a time division multiplexed carrier frequency band. Preferably, in communicating the spread spectrum random access channel signal, a random access channel signal, representing the random access channel message, is direct sequence modulated according to the spreading sequence to produce a direct sequence modulated random access channel signal. According to a two-stage detection aspect, a synchronization sequence may be associated with a plurality of spreading sequences. The synchronization sequence may be first detected from the communicated spread spectrum random access channel signal, and in response to detection of the synchronization sequence, one of the plurality of spreading sequences associated with the detected synchronization sequence may be detected. A station identification may be assigned to the radiotelephone, with the station identification preferably represented by a digital station identification word. The synchronization sequence and the spreading sequence may be identified from the station identification word, thus associating the synchronization and spreading sequences. The spreading sequence may also be randomly generated from the station identification word.

    • In a time division mutiple access (TDMA) satellite radiotelephone communications system, a radiotelephone communicates random access channel radiotelephone communications signals to a satellite over a dedicated random access channel uplink carrier frequency band. In response, a time division mutiple access channel on a time division multiplexed uplink carrier frequency band different from the dedicated random access channel uplink carrier frequency band is assigned. The radiotelephone communicates time division multiplexed radiotelephone communications signals to the satellite over the allocated time division multiple access channel. Random access channel radiotelephone communications signals may be communicated to the satellite from a first radiotelephone over a first dedicated random access channel uplink carrier frequency band or from a second radiotelephone over a second dedicated random access channel uplink carrier frequency band different from said first dedicated random access channel uplink carrier frequency band. For a system in which the satellite communicates radiotelephone communications signals to radiotelephones located in a first coverage area and communicates radiotelephone communications signals to radiotelephones located in a second coverage area, random access channel radiotelephone communications signals may be communicated over a first dedicated random access uplink carrier frequency band if the radiotelephone is located in the first coverage area or communicating random access radiotelephone communications signals over a second dedicated random access channel uplimk carrier frequency band different from the first dedicated random access uplink carrier band if the radiotelephone is located in the second coverage area.

    • Radiotelephone communications are processed to produce a pilot-symbol-assisted modulation (PSAM) communications symbol sequence, including a plurality of predetermined pilot symbols interleaved with a plurality of information symbols. The PSAM communications symbol sequence is communicated over a radiotelephone communications channel having a transfer characteristic. Pilot symbol data, corresponding to pilot symbols, and information symbol data, corresponding to information symbols, are identified in the sequence of communications symbol data. A data-augmented estimate of the transfer characteristic of the radiotelephone communications channel is generated from the pilot symbol data and the information symbol data. Estimates of information symbols are generated from the corresponding information symbol data and the generated estimate of the transfer characteristic. Estimates of the transfer characteristic are iteratively generated by identifying a group of information symbol data corresponding to a group of information symbols, generating estimates of the group of identified information symbols from the group of information symbol data and a previously generated estimate of the radiotelephone communications channel transfer characteristic, and generating a new estimate of the transfer characteristic from the pilot symbol data, the information symbol data, and previously generated estimates of information symbols.

    • Desired audio information intermittently present in a first audio signal is communicated over a communications medium by generating a first communications signal in the communications medium when the desired audio information is present in the first audio signal, the first communications signal representing the first audio signal encoded as blocks of communications data according to a predetermined code. A second communications signal is received from the communications medium. The received second communications signal is processed to produce processed blocks of communications data. A metric representing the validity of a plurality of the processed blocks of communications data is then determined, and a second audio signal is generated from the plurality of processed blocks of communications data when the metric is within a predetermined range. A filler audio signal such as comfort noise is generated, preferably from predetermined audio data derived from a previously received communications signal, when the metric is outside of the predetermined range. Preferably, generation of the first communications signal is discontinued when the desired audio information is absent from the audio signal, without generating an explicit discontinuity message. The discontinuous transmission function may be implemented using a separate cyclic redundancy coding (CRC) scheme, or may be implemented using a combined decoding metric derived from a forward error correction coding scheme.

    • A communications system for transmitting selected information to a registered mobile terminal in response to the reporting of a vehicle identification associated with the registered mobile terminal to a database system. The communications system includes a database system having a memory with registered vehicle identifications and associated information. The database system is coupled to a radio system for receiving a reporting signal including a vehicle identification sent by a reporting mobile terminal. In response to the inputted reported vehicle identification, the database system identifies a registered vehicle identification corresponding to the reported vehicle identification and selects associated information corresponding to the identified registered vehicle identification. In the first preferred embodiment, the selected associated information includes a selected phone number and the database system sends the selected message to a registered mobile terminal associated with the vehicle identification. In a second preferred embodiment, the database system sends the selected associated information to the reporting mobile terminal. The selected associated information includes a message such as a password, codeword, or voice message.
