    • The invention relates to an apparatus and method for manufacturing a three-dimensional object (2) by consecutively consolidating, layer by layer, selected areas of a powder stratum, the consolidated areas corresponding to consecutive sections of the three-dimensional object, each layer being divided into an inner central portion (22) and an outer edge (21), said method comprising the following steps, in order: a) depositing a powder layer onto a substrate; b) melting the outer edge of said powder layer using a laser beam (19) from a first power source by moving the laser beam from said first power source relative to the object (2) along a predetermined path that follows the outline of said outer edge (21) corresponding to the outline of the cross-section of the object so as to selectively melt said layer; c) melting the inner central portion of the powder layer using an electron beam (20) from a second power source by moving the electron beam from said second power source relative to the object by sweeping said inner central portion (22) over a predetermined path corresponding to the inner central portion (22) of the cross-section of the object so as to selectively melt said layer; or d) repeating steps a and b N times so as to form a plurality of layers of melted material, arranged one on top of the other, thereby forming a portion of the outer edge (21) of said object (2), and then carrying out step c so as to melt the inner central portion (22) of the object (2) corresponding to the N powder layers; and e) repeating steps a to c or a, b, and d until all of the layers of the object are consolidated.
