    • A fan drive assembly including a cooling fan (11) and a fluid coupling device (13). The cooling fan includes a fan hub (17), a spider (15), and a plurality of fan blades (19). The coupling device has an output coupling assembly (21) including a body (23) and a cover (25). The body (23) includes preferably only three mounting portions (67), each being disposed immediately adjacent an outer periphery of the body. Each of the mounting portions (67) defines the necessary machining chucking surfaces (73), and a spider mounting surface (75) including a pilot surface (77) engaging the pilot diameter (79) of the spider (15). The body (23) includes cooling fins (61) covering substantially all of the rearward surface (59) of the body not covered by the mounting portions. The fan hub (17) also includes a rearwardly extending air dam portion (81), limiting localized radial air flow. The present invention is able to improve the radial air flow through the body cooling fins and achieve substantially greater heat dissipation from the fan drive assembly, thus permitting greater fan speed for a given input speed.

    • An electronically-controlled viscous coupling (50) is coupled to a water pump (34) to control the coolant flow rate of engine coolant to an engine at a given engine speed to maximize fuel economy and minimize emissions. The viscous coupling has a stationary electrical coil (52) that, when excited by electrical current, induces the driven disk (60) to flex away from an input disk (54) within the viscous, thereby increasing the size of the shear area, thereby decreasing the amount of torque produced to drive the water pump shaft (62) and impellers (77) that control the coolant flow rate. A carrier (71) coupled to the back of the driven disk maximizes the amount of flex allowed to the driven disk, thereby assuring a maximum decrease in rotational speed of the impellers at a given engine speed and ensuring that the driven disk does not contact the stationary coil.

    • A fan drive assembly comprises a cooling fan (11) attached to a fluid coupling device (13). The cooling fan (11) includes a fan hub (17) and a plurality of fan blades (19) extending radially from said fan hub (17). The fluid coupling device (13) includes a rotatable coupling assembly (21) including a body member (23) having a rearward surface (59), and a cover member (25) cooperating with said body member (23) to define a fluid chamber (39) therebetween. A rotatable coupling member (27) is disposed in said fluid chamber (39) for rotation relative to said coupling assembly (21). The coupling assembly (21) and the coupling member (27) cooperate to define a viscous shear chamber (55,57) therebetween, whereby torque may be transmitted from said coupling member (27) to said coupling assembly (21) in response to the presence of viscous fluid in said viscous shear chamber (55,57). Said body member includes a plurality of cooling fins (61) on said rearward surface. Each of said plurality of fan blades (19) defines a back-to-back dimension measured rearward from said cooling fins (61) to the rearward side of each of said fan blades (19). Said fan hub (17) defines a rearward axially extending air dam portion (81) at each of said plurality of fan blades (19), said air dam portion (81) defining an axial length measured rearward from said cooling fins (61), which is in the range of about 60% to about 70% of said back-to-back dimension.

Said body member includes a plurality of cooling fins (61) on said rearward surface. Each of said plurality of fan blades (19) defines a back-to-back dimension measured rearward from said cooling fins (61) to the rearward side of each of said fan blades (19).
