The horizontal surfaces of the boss (88;188;300) and center pin (90;190;310) do not bear any vertical load under normal conditions, and no center plate is provided. The center pin (190;310) and boss (188;300) can be integral, and can be made to extend upward from the bogie bolster to be received in an opening in the draft sill (314).

    • A rotary railway coupler (10) is provided having compound fillets (94, 96) of variable increasing radii of curvature inserted between the shank (84) and the butt end (54) of the coupler (10). The compound fillets (94, 96) reduce the stress concentration between the shank (84) and the butt end (54) of the coupler (10) by distributing the stress over a greater curved surface area in order to decrease the possibility of fatigue cracking and failure at the transition surface between the coupler shank (84) and butt end (54). The compound fillet (94, 96) may also be arranged to undercut the surfaces (78, 80, 86, 88) of the coupler shank (84) and butt end (54) in order to reduce metal build-up at this location.

    • A railway car with a slackless drawbar arrangement for unit trainservice and the like is provided and includes a drawbar (15) having a section (50) which is fabricated. The fabricated intermediate section (50) is cut from a section of seamless pipe or tubing or can be fabricated from plate, while the coupling end pieces (16,18) attached to each end of the shank are at least partially cast members made from typical casting methods. The coupling end pieces can be cast into standard fixed or rotatable drawbar ends or even be a combination thereof with rotational capability. The geometric shape of the intermediate section is varied, depending upon the application, so that resistance to torsional or bending loads is maximized. The fabricated shank portion is hollow, as is part of the body of the coupling end pieces, thereby reducing the railcar's weight and costs to manufacture.

    • Center filler plates (16;50;50') for mounting on draft sills of railway car underframes are disclosed. The center filler plates have four pockets (96,96') surrounding a hub (62,62'). The pockets are shallower than in the prior art, and the walls defining the pockets (96,96') meet in radii having larger radii of curvature than in the prior art. The shallower pockets (96,96') and larger radii of curvature facilitate removal of the casting from the molding sand in the cope and drag sections of the mold. The formation of burned-in sand is limited in the present invention, and any burned-in sand that does form is also more easily removed from the center filler plates of the present invention. The base portion of the center filler plates (50,50') is not as high as in the prior art. The ribs (90,90') of the center filler plate and the walls of the hub (62,62') are thicker than in the prior art to provide the needed strength to the center filler plates. In one embodiment, the ribs (90) taper toward the hub (62), and the hub is shorter than the surrounding web (76); a tool may be inserted through the kingpin hole, expanded to bear against the tapered surfaces of the ribs (90); a machine may be used to lift the center filler plate and move it into position on the draft sill. The tool may then be contracted and removed, and the center filler plate may be secured to the draft sill through welding or other techniques.

The female connecting member (34) has a complementary shaped groove (80) to receive the tapered wear liner (78). The female connecting member (34) has a bottom wall (68) with a substantially uniform thickness from the wear liner (78) to the exterior surface of the female connecting member (34). A main pin (40) connects the male and female connecting members (32,34) together and a center pin (100) is integral with the main pin (40) and connected to the railroad car truck. The present invention is useful with railroad car trucks that have concave curved center plate areas.

    • The present invention relates to a railway car coupler arrangement whereby a standard yoke, follower, and draft gear are removed from the center sill and replaced with a short yoke member (30), a spacer block member (70) and slackless drawbar arrangement, namely, a pocket casting wedge shim (60), and follower (50), easily converting the coupler arrangement to a drawbar arrangement without modifying the center sill. The short yoke (30), spacer block (70) and slackless arrangement fit exactly within the space formerly occupied by the draft gear pocket casting. The drawbar arrangement maintains the same degrees of angling freedom as the coupler since the drawbar is connected and pivoted from the same pin location as when the coupler was installed. The short yoke member (30) is also designed to more uniformly distribute draft loads to the center sill by transferring forces from the connecting pin into the short yoke member, which in turn transfers those forces into abutting center sill front stops, left intact from the coupler arrangement. The present invention further provides a quick method for converting a broken coupler to a drawbar arrangement for towing back to a repair shop.
