    • A three-piece railcar bogie assembly has two side frames (103,105) and a bolster extending (16) extending between the side frames (103,105).     • A system (40) for removing waste material from the bell end (24) of a cast iron pipe (14) is disclosed. The system has both a cleaning assembly and an exhaust system. The cleaning assembly (46) has a plurality of wire brushes (52) mounted on a shaft (50). The shaft is mounted on a cart (72) that also supports a movable part of the exhaust system (48). The cart moves the wire brushes and part of the movable part of the exhaust system into and out of the bell end of the pipe. A motor (112) on the cart rotates the shaft and brushes, and a tilt mechanism tilts the brushes down to contact the pipe. The pipe is rotated about its central longitudinal axis as the brushes contact and clean the pipe. The rotating brushes clean the sand core from the end of the pipe, and the waste sand is drawn by the exhaust system to the bag house where it is filtered. The exhaust system also includes a stationary duct (140). The stationary duct has a door (150) and a chute (152). Larger chunks of waste sand can be removed from the exhaust system through the door and chute.

    • An assembly apparatus (10) and method of assembling workpieces together are disclosed. The apparatus (10) includes a drive linkage (58) with a linearly movable ram (30) for pushing one workpiece toward the other. The drive linkage (58) also includes a rotatable drive train. In the assembly apparatus, a transducer (136) is provided to determine the load existing in the drive linkage (58), and a resolver (152) is provided to determine the stage of the assembly cycle. A programmable controller (138) is used to correlate this information, and a device (156) is provided for communicating a message related to the correlated information. The transducer (136) may be a strain measuring device or a pressure transducer (136) measuring the pressure in an hydraulic cylinder (96) in the drive linkage. The communication device (156) may be a visual monitor, alarm, recording device, or similar communicator. The system may include a data storage device (154) to receive information on the preferred load or range of loads so that the programmable controller (138) may retrieve this data and compare it to the existing load and warn of or record any undesirable deviation. In the method, the load in the drive linkage (58) is determined, the rotation position of a part of the rotational drive linkage is determined, and this data is correlated and an appropriate communication is made. The apparatus and method may be useful in assuring that a preferred minimum load is applied during assembly for quality control.
