    • A linerless plastic closure cap (10) is provided for use with containers which require a very tight seal such as on carbonated beverage containers. This closure cap has sealing flanges (30,32) and abutment surfaces (42,44) for limiting the sealing flange defection. The sealing flanges (30,32) are provided with spaced vent slots (60) which function to gradually release the pressure in a beverage (e.g. a carbonated beverage) container as the closure cap (10) is removed. When the closure cap (10) is applied to a container, the sealing flanges (30,32) are deflected outwardly by engagement with the container neck (28) and this deflection is limited by the abutment surfaces (42,44). A load stop ring (50) prevents deflecton of the seal flanges (30,32) due to top loading. The closure cap (10) is dimensioned relative to the container to provide a requisite amount of horizontal seal interference (A,B) between the container neck finish (28) and the sealing flanges (30,32) to ensure a proper seal thus providing a closure cap (10) useable on a wide variety of containers.

    • A plastic cap (10) for vacuum sealing glass containers such as bottles or jars is disclosed. The cap (10) includes atop wall (12) and a depending annular side wall (14) which extends over and is adapted to be threadedly secured to the neck of a container. The depending side wall (14) has at its lower edge a lead-in chamber (24) and suitable threads (26) adapted to engage corresponding threads formed n the exterior of the container to which it is to be secured. In a preferred form, serrations (18) are provided on the exterior surface of the cap (10) for gripping purposes, and a reinforcement shoulder (22) is located on the outer perimeter of the side wall (14) adjacent the lower edge thereof to prevent excessive cap expansion upon application to a container. Vacuum sealing is attained by means of two annular flanges (28 and 30) depending from and integrally formed with the top wall of the cap. The two flanges (28 and 30) are so located and angled as to engage the inner and outer rim edges of the container to which the cap (10) is applied, whereby the flanges (28 and 30) form air-tight seals with the rim edges when the cap (10) is screwed onto the container.

    • A container for carbonated beverages is disclosed. The container includes an interlocking plastic lid and plastic can construction wherein the lid snaps onto the can to provide a sealed container capable of withstanding high internal pressure without leakage. The can includes a neck portion having an inwardly extending ridge and an outwardly flared mouth thereabove. An outwardly and downwardly extending locking flange is unitarily formed at the top of the can mouth. the lid includes a concave top wall which fits into the can mouth and engages the ridge, and a peripheral rim which includes a downwardly opening groove to receive the locking flange. The lid is rigid, and is shaped to compress the locking flange as the lid is pressed onto the can, with the locking flange snapping outwardly over an annular shoulder to secure the lid in place. The flange is held in compression by the groove to insure an intimate surface-to-surface seal around the circumference of the can, the rigid lid providing sufficient hoop strength to maintain the shape of the container, even under high internal pressures.

    • A tamper evident closure (12) preferably for use on a screw threaded neck (16) of a container (14) is disclosed. The closure (12) includes a closure cap (34) and a tamper evident band (36). The tamper evident band (36) is joined to the cap's sidewall (40) by a plurality of bridge strips (60) on the tamper evident band (36). During application of the-cap (34) to the container neck (16), the band (36) deforms as the ratchet teeth (52) cam over co-operatively shaped ratchet lugs (26) on the bottle neck (16). However, during cap removal, the ratchet lugs (26) stop the ratchet teeth (52) and the tamper evident band (36) from moving so that the band (36) is separated from the cap (34) thereby providing a clear indication of tempering with the closure (12). Appearance is enhanced and manufacture improved by arranging for bridge strips (60) to be circumferentially aligned with ratchet teeth (52) and ensuring that the tamper evident band (36) is quite thin and has an outer diameter which approximates to that of the cap's sidewall (40).
