First and second molten thermoplastic materials (A, B) are supplied to the distributor (60) and centrifuged as alternating thin layers to the face (106) of the spinner (100). The spinner (100) is also rotated to centrifuge dual-component fibers (68) through the orifices (108) in the peripheral wall (102) of the spinner (100).

摘要： This invention provides preforms (10) of continuous glass fiber strands for use as the sound-absorbing material in an engine exhaust muffler (30). Preferably, the material is made of glass fibers of E glass compositions. With this invention, the strands are fluffed up, not directly in the muffler (30), but in a cavity that is made of a perforated shell (20) matching the muffler (30) shape. During this operation, a powder binder also is blown in with the fibers. This blowing operation is completed by forcing hot air through the preform (10) which melts or cures the binder and allows it to bond the fibers together.

The pins (128A) and (130B) engage one or more of the strands (26), limiting the axial width of the package (94A) and greatly improving the edges of the package (94A). The movable strand shoe (52A), strand array guide (102A) and pins may be utilized in pairs to produce a pair of packages (94A and 94B) on a single elongated collet (90A).

摘要： A process for forming a continuous strand preformable mat is disclosed which consists of applying a binder matrix material which includes a thermosetting polyester binder material and a thermoplastic polyester binder to the continuous strand mat. The mat is heated such that the thermosetting binder material cures and hardens while the thermoplastic binder material softens and flows around strand intersections. The mat is thereafter cooled in order to solidify the thermoplastic polyester material of the binder matrix for additional handling for packaging and for subsequent handling by the customer. The preforms are made by heating the mat to oven 93.3 °C (200 °F), placing in a cold mold, and then closing the mold to form and solidify the mat shape.
