摘要： Media according to the present invention is comprised of individual magnetic grains as small as 300 Å or smaller in diameter, which are uniformly spaced apart by a distance between 5 and 50 Å by a solid segregant. This media will typically exhibit coercivity and remanent coercivity squareness of at least 0.8 each, a switching field distribution of less than 0.2, and a coercivity of at least 1500 Oe (with a minimum required Pt content), while simultaneously providing the lowest media jitter noise for optimum magnetic performance. The media is deposited at a low partial pressure of water and in the presence of an optimum amount of contributant gas on a doped nucleation layer for grain growth control.

摘要： A hard disk drive utilizing a combination of thin film recording heads and media allows high density recording through virtual contact recording, while still providing excellent contact start stop performance and low stiction. The air bearing surface of the head has a microscopically fine texture which provides reliable mechanical performance with a constant and very low flying height. A skew insensitive constant flying height over the disk surface can be provided with the use of transverse pressure contour or cross-cut slider designs. The slider air bearing surface is textured by selective mechanical removal of subsurface damaged regions left behind during the diamond lapping of the slider air bearing surface, thereby leaving the slider less abrasive to the disk. A slider with this fine texture on the air bearing surface permits the use of a much smoother texture and thinner overcoat on the disk than currently possible using conventional sliders. This combination of slider and the disk allows the head to fly very close to the magnetic layer of the media without suffering from head crash or high stiction. This combination offers a low cost and simplified method of achieving a high recording density.

If a sufficient amount of hydrogen is present in the sputtering chamber (5), the resulting carbon film will exhibit superior mechanical characteristics, i.e. an enhanced wear resistance during a contact-start-stop or drag test in a disk drive. Sputtering in the presence of hydrogen can be accomplished by either DC or RF magnetron sputtering, or DC or RF diode sputtering.

摘要： A film of magnetic recording media is covered with a protective layer comprising a sputtered zirconium compound. Advantageously, the zirconium compound is Zr0 2 and such a layer inhibits corrosion in the underlying magnetic recording media. The Zr0 2 layer is wear resistant and also exhibits reduced static friction. In one embodiment of our invention, an intermediate layer is sputtered onto the media and the Zr0 2 is sputtered onto the intermediate layer. Advantageously, the intermediate layer adheres strongly to both the media and the Zr0 2 . We have discovered that by providing the intermediate layer, static and dynamic friction between a read-write head and the disk tends to remain consistently low, and reliability of the disk is enhanced.

摘要： A carrier (100) is provided to hold a central apertured disk (110) while magnetic material is plated simultaneously on the annular surfaces on both sides of the disk. The carrier contains a first opening (102) substantially the same diameter as the disk and a second opening (104) formed about a center line off set from the center line of the first opening so as to form a recess around a portion of the edge of the first opening. The disk is inserted into the first opening and recess to block the flow of plasma and impurities from one side of the disk to the other during the disk surface coating. A two-part plug (10) is provided for placement in and sealing the center aperture of the disk. One plug part contains a spring or magnetic means (26) for holding the two parts together within the disk. The plug includes a knob (17) for handling, carrying and mounting or removing the disk from the carrier. A plurality of openings are provided in the carrier to allow both surfaces of a corresponding plurality of disks to be coated simultaneously with magnetic media with plugs sealing the central aperture of each disk during processing.

摘要： Sputtering method for producing amorphous hydrogenated carbon thin films with high sp 3 content. By sputtering the carbon with a pulsed DC power supply having high voltage peaks, a carbon film with remarkably high sp 3 bonding fraction can be obtained. Previously, carbon films with a very high sp 3 fraction film with content as high (e.g. as 80%) could only be produced by methods such as filtered cathodic arc deposition or chemical vapor deposition methods (CVD) such as plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) and ion-beam deposition operating at some narrowly defined range of deposition conditions. It is very advantageous to use sputtering to create a high sp 3 content film, since sputtering is more manufacturable and has higher productivity compared to CVD or ion-beam deposition methods. The resultant carbon film has excellent durability and corrosion resistance capability down to very low thickness. Also compared to PE-CVD and ion-beam deposition, the new sputtering process produce much less particles and the process can be run on a manufacturing tool for much longer time, thereby increasing the productivity of the machine, and providing disks with higher quality.
