    • A facsimile system and method provides authentication of transmitted image information, which authentication may be in the form of a signature page. An authentication device computes authentication information at a sending device, a receiving device, both, or at a remote location during transmission. The signature page may also be transmitted with the document. The sending and receiving devices may each generate signature pages or acknowledgement of receipt in response to receiving a signature page. The authentication information may be encrypted with a public/private key pair. The authentication information may be in the form of a checksum, and may be prepared based on separate regions of the document. A previously generated signature page is compared to a newly generated signature page to verify the document content or authenticity. Document authentication signatures may include machine-readable symbols to represent the authentication information.

    • Systems and methods of providing video support for standard (i.e., non-video-capable) communications systems (106) that require little or no modifications to any existing standard communications systems (106). The systems and methods can be implemented between at least one video channel and a standard communications system (106) to establish call connections between a user of a video-capable communications device (108) and a user of a standard (i.e., non-video-capable) communications device (110), to access video content and any associated audio content stored on a video server (104), and to exchange audio between the respective users of the video-capable (108) and standard communications devices (110) while controlling the video and/or audio output of the video-capable communications device (108), using the video content and any associated audio content accessed from the video server (104). The systems and methods can significantly enhance the experience of the user of the video-capable communications device (108), without requiring cost prohibitive upgrading or replacement of any existing standard communications systems (106).

    • A Group Exchange Port (GXP) is disclosed which provides an organized technique for passing control of live objects (e.g.; a telephone call, a robotic arm, flying aircraft, etc.) from a first application operating on and processing the object to a second such application. In accordance with the invention, a Group Exchange Port is provided where buyer applications register there willingness to accept control of the system and sellers may "advertise" an object for sale. When a suitable buyer (i.e.; one that has the proper resources for servicing and controlling the active system) is found, control of the object is passed from the seller to the buyer. Importantly, the GXP requires that control of the object always be maintained by one and only one application, that control not be passed to an application which cannot properly service and/or control the system, and that an application presently controlling the system does not relinquish such control until a new application accepts such control. The technique allows loosely coupled applications to work with the same object.
