摘要： A system for testing a telecommunication line is provided. The system includes acentral unit, at least one remote unit and threshold detection means. The central unit (16) includes signal generation means (20) capable of generating a test signal (26) of increasing amplitude or frequency and is operatively connected to an exchange end of the line. The central unit further includes comparator means connected to the signal generation means. The remote unit is connected in use to a subscriber unit end of the line and is operable under control of the central unit selectively to disconnect the subscriber unit. The threshold detection means (38) detects when the test signal reaches a predetermined threshold and, in response thereto, the comparator means compares the predetermined threshold with the amplitude of the test signal applied to the line when the predetermined threshold is reached. From the comparison line attenuation may be determined.

摘要： Method of processing a transmitted digital media data stream. A subsequent data element that follows an unreceived data element in the data stream is received. A parameter of the unreceived data element is estimated based on the received subsequent data element. In one embodiment, each received data element is held in a buffer until a prescribed playout deadline, at which time the data element is released for playout. A loss rate at which data elements in the data stream are not received by their respective playout deadlines is monitored. A time interval extending from the time a data element is sent by a transmitting end to the playout deadline is adjusted based upon the loss rate.

When the subscriber occupies a line (22), a controller activates an Internet presence server (70) that determines online status by checking IP activity at the subscriber's IP address. If the subscriber is online and has indicated a preference to accept calls, the controller (65) activates a pop-up screen at the subscriber's terminal (20) to display menu options to handle the call, such as answering via VoIP, text-to-speech synthesis, forwarding the call to a specific number, or sending the call to voicemail. A voicemail message may also be sent to an email account as an audio file or as a pager alert with short message text. The system may be centrally located within a network or integrated with subscriber premises equipment. Certain management features may also be disabled dynamically in response to on-line status.

The microcontroller (84) under program control changes operational parameters in the interface (82) as a function of electrical characteristics of the particular type of PBX to which the interface (82) is connected. The changes in operational parameters of the interface (82), in turn, are used to configure the network interface logic (66') depending upon the type of PBX. The universal nature of the interface (82) is achieved by adaptability to different transmission and receiver voltage levels and an ability to match a range of telephone line impedances.

摘要： The present invention provides a method and apparatus for improving the performance of splitterless ADSL systems. The present invention provides a uniform technique for adapting an ADSL system to any of these situations. The invention provides a graduated approach to handling anomalies that may be caused by incompatible telephone equipment. One embodiment of the invention attempts to correct anomalous situations without having to interrupt the data communication. If more information is needed, a very brief channel echo measurement is conducted. Only if the problem cannot be resolved at this point is retraining of the modem performed. This approach greatly minimizes interruption of data communication and reduction of bandwidth. Another embodiment of the invention reduces the transmitted signal level to its lowest practical value to minimize interference with telephone equipment. Multiple levels of signal reduction are available, and user input may be obtained to optimize the transmit signal level.
