    • An electrical supply control system from a battery to the electrical facilities of a motor vehicle is arranged to isolate the battery from the electrical facilities in some circumstances to reduce the risk of inadvertent drain on the battery. The system comprises a main switch (12) arranged to supply power from the battery (11), to the electrical facilities (15, 16). A coil (18) is arranged when energised to close the main switch (12) and is connected to be energised when an engine function element such as an ignition switch (23) is active. The coil can be disconnected from the engine function element by a connector (24). A manually operable mechanical actuator (21, 19) for the main switch is arranged in one position to close the main switch (12) to provide a continuous supply to the electrical facilities and in another position to allow the state of energisation of the coil (18) to control opening and closing of the main switch and thus isolate the loads when the engine function element i9 inactive. With battery (11), switch (12) and the connector (24) in an inaccessible locked compartment (10), the connector (24) disconnected and the main switch open mechanically, security is provided against unauthorised use of the vehicle.

    • A hydraulic tappet for an internal combustion engine has a collar (15) located axially on a valve stem (10), the outer periphery of the collar (15) slidably engaging a cylindrical bore (20) which is coaxial with the valve stem (10). A cap (25) having a central tubular formation (26) which slidingly engages over the end (17) of the valve stem (10) and an outer periphery which engages the cylindrical bore (20), is separated axially of the collar (15), to define a first chamber (30) between the cap (25) and collar (15) and a second chamber (35) between the cap (25) and the end (17) of valve stem (10). An inlet (31, 32) for hydraulic fluid is provided to the first chamber (30) and the first and second chambers (30, 35) one interconnected by a non-return valve (37) which prevents flow from the second chamber (35). A controlled leakage path is provided from the second chamber and a spring (40) biases the cap (25) into engagement with a cam formation (45).

    • A continuously variable transmission system includes an input assembly having a first member (11) connected to an input shaft (10), the first member (11) being of cylindrical formation and having a pair of axially separated inwardly directed flange formations (12, 13). The opposed faces (14, 15) of flange formations (12, 13) are conical and are inclined inwardly away from one another. A second member (20) is mounted in fixed rotational relationship but movable axially of the first member (11). The second member (20) has an inwardly directed flange formation with oppositely inclined conical faces (22, 23). The first and second members (11, 20) thereby define a pair of inwardly directed annular grooves (25, 26) the walls (14, 22; 15, 23) of which diverge inwardly. First and second annular discs (30, 35) are mounted for rotation about axes (32, 37) parallel to but eccentric of the axis of rotation of the input assembly, so that each disc (30, 35) engages in a different one of the grooves (25, 26). Each disc (30, 35) engages the opposed conical walls (14, 22; 15, 23) of its associated groove (25, 26) so that drive is transmitted from the input assembly to each of the discs (30, 35).
