    • An engine and transmission arrangement for a four wheel drive vehicle comprises an engine (1) arranged to extend substantially along a longitudinal centre line of the vehicle. A gearbox (3) receives power from the engine and a torque splitting device (6) is connected to an output of the gearbox so as to pass part of the power to a rear final drive and part of the power to a front final drive. The front final drive and the rear final drive each includes a drive shaft (7,14a,16) which extends substantially along the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle and at least a part of one of the drive shafts (14a) extends above a substantial portion of the engine.

    • A camshaft drive mechanism includes a drive sprocket (10) mounted for rotation on one end of a camshaft (11), a plurality of double planet gears (13) are mounted in angularly spaced relationship on the drive sprocket (10), said planet gears (13) being freely rotatable relative to the drive sprocket (10), each planet gear (13) having a first set of teeth (15) meshing with a gear (17) mounted for rotation with the camshaft (11) and a second set of teeth (16) meshing with a gear (20) mounted, coaxially of the camshaft (11), for rotation with a secondary input shaft (18), the ratio of the number of teeth on the gear (17) to those on gear (20) being greater than 1, the secondary input shaft (18) being rotatable to vary the drive ratio or phase relationship between the drive sprocket (10) and camshaft (11).
