The data center (503, 803) receives transaction records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309), where a transaction record (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) is associated with each transaction performed by the franking system (100, 505-1, 505-2, 505-n) in each period. Each record (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) includes at least the postage dispensed (305) in the associated franking transaction, and an ascending register value (307) indicating the cumulative postage dispensed. Using the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309), the data center (503, 803) assesses the charges during the period and causes assessed charges to be charged to an account associated with the franking system (100, 505-1, 505-2, 505-n). In addition, the data center (503, 803) forwards a copy of the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) to another system (507, 550, 565, 850, 865) for storage, which may be used by the postal authority or utility to audit the charges.

摘要： To facilitate printing of postage or other images onto media of variable size, an apparatus determines the size of the medium in at least one dimension prior to or during the printing of the image, such that the image to be printed is adjusted based upon the determined size of the medium. The apparatus may be a postage meter, in which case information is received by a data processor concerning the size of a mail piece and the postal value. An initial image made up of a fixed portion, including postal indicia, and a user-defined variable portion, is then altered in view of this input to provide a final image for printing on the mail piece which fits fully on the mail piece. The alteration effects only the variable portion of the image, which may be truncated, scaled or replaced with a different variable portion.

摘要： In a postage payment system (100), a secure integrated circuit (IC) card (180) is used to manage postage funds, and create encrypted postage indicia (305, 605, 700). Among other things, the system (100) is capable of performing charge-back accounting of postage expenses and generating mail contents (300). In accordance with an aspect of the invention, the postage indicia (305, 605, 700) are applied to selected locations on the mail contents (300) while they are being generated. In the preferred embodiment, each mail content (300) is placed in a window envelope (340) such that the postage indicium (305, 605, 700) on the mail content (300) exposes through a window (347) of the envelope (340) to facilitate inspection of the indicium (305, 605, 700). In accordance with another aspect of the invention, by including transactional data (708) in addition to the traditional postal data (709) in a postage indicium (305, 605, 700), the indicium (305, 605, 700) can be used to pay bills, purchase products and services, including any courier service different than the postal service, or used as cash, a traveler's check, or money order.

When a history tab is pressed, the display reverts to the previous status of the category of interest, and allows the user to make changes if desired. 摘要： In a franking system a postal security device (PSD) tracks a postage fund for dispensing postal indicia and enforce the configuration of the franking system. An authorization code, which is particular to the system, is used to verify the system configuration. An unauthorized change in the system configuration causes invalidation of the code and generation of the postal indicia is denied. Data center (125) records configuration information of each franking system (100). The data center generates a valid authorization code for verification in the franking system based on new configuration information. Components added to the system must be preapproved to prevent fraudulent generation of postage indicia. A registration number is assigned to each preapproved component which is necessary for interaction with the franking system.

Authenticity of the indicia (26) may be verified by accessing a database to determine if the unique indicia (26) has previously been received and at least some of the information it contains entered into the database.
