    • In a diisopropyl ether production process the distillation step for the separation of aqueous IPA recovered from the DIPE extraction operations is modified to avoid carrying out the distillation under conditions that yield IPA-water azeotrope. The overhead and bottom streams from an aqueous IPA fractionation process operated under off-azeotrope conditions in DIPE production are recycled, respectively, to the DIPE reactor and extractor operations. Recycling the water and IPA overhead mixture eliminates the requirement for adding fresh water to the DIPE reactor. Returning the water and IPA bottom stream to the extractor reduces the requirement for distilled water addition to the extraction step. A less complex and costly aqueous IPA separation process results.

    • A process is disclosed for integrating etherification to produce diisopropyl ether (DIPE) with processes to convert oxygenates and hydrocarbons to gasoline boiling range hydrocarbons in a manner which eliminates the requirement to recycle unreacted C₃ hydrocarbons to the DIPE etherification zone. In the novel integrated process the unreacted C₃ hydrocarbons are separated as vapor and passed to a conversion zone in contact with acidic metallosilicate catalyst. Depending on the conversion conditions the unreacted C₃ hydrocarbons are converted to gasoline, distillate and/or aromatics, preferably in conjunction with additional feedstock containing lower oxygenates, olefins or paraffins. Also, isopropanol (IPA) and minor by-product dimers and trimers of propene from the DIPE reaction are separated and passed as a feedstream to the oxygenates and hydrocarbon conversion zone. In one embodiment, the water feedstream for the DIPE reactor is first passed to the DIPE effluent high pressure separator where it serves to extract a portion of the IPA in the effluent stream. The aqueous effluent from the high pressure separator is then introduced into the etherification zone for hydration of propene and etherification to form DIPE.

    • A portion of the heat of vaporization, required to separate and recover methanol from wash water used to remove methanol from a C₄ raffinate resulting from the reaction of isobutene containing C₄ hydrocarbons and methanol to produce MTBE is recovered by conducting the distillation of the methanol/water mixture at a pressure of 40 to 60 psig, thereby increasing the temperature of the methanol overhead to 104 to 114° C and using the reaction effluent from the MTBE reactor to cool and condense the methanol overhead, said reactor effluent being correspondingly heated prior to entry into a debutanizer tower where unreacted C₄'s and methanol are removed as a raffinate and MTBE product recovered. It is this raffinate that is washed with water to recover the unreacted methanol, with the methanol/water mixture being distilled as set forth above. In another embodiment a stream having a lower temperature than the methanol overhead is withdrawn from the debutanizer and used to cool the methanol overhead, then the correspondingly heated stream returned to the debutanizer.

    • A method is disclosed wherein t-butanol is reacted with methanol in a reaction zone in the presence of a catalyst to provide methyl- tert -butyl ether and the improvement of accomplishing the reaction in one-step which comprises:

      a. using a catalyst selected from the group consisting of acidic aluminas, acidic silicas, or combinations thereof and zeolites containing alumina or silica, and acidic clay mineral catalysts;
      b. continuously contacting said t-butanol and methanol in a molar amount of about 0.1 to 10 moles of methanol per mole of t-butanol with said catalyst at a temperature of about 20°C to about 250°C and a pressure of about atmospheric to about 1000 psig to obtain the methyl- tert -butyl product.
