    • From a time point of last confirmation of operation of the working device 51 until a time point of next confirmation, the standby device 52 receives the same packet as that whose transfer processing is executed by the working device from the interface units 521-1 ~521-n, processes the packet by the transfer unit 522 and holds the processed packet in the accumulation units 525-1 ~ 525-n. The device monitors an operation state of the working device 51 by an advertisement transmitted by the working device 51 and upon reception of the advertisement, responsively abandons the packet held in the accumulation units 525-1 ~ 525-n. When determining that the working device 51 stops by non-arrival of an advertisement for a predetermined time period, the device sends out the packet held in the accumulation units 525-1 ~ 525-n and switches processing so as to itself operate as a working device.

    • The present invention features embodiments of alleviating the impact to a system of stack switches (120), as well as to neighboring nodes communicating with such a system, when a primary master switch to secondary master switch failover occurs. The features of the present invention, generally enables a system of stack switches (120,100,101,102,103) to retain, for a fixed or indefinite period of time, its stack address even when multiple primary master to secondary master failovers occur. This way recalculation of certain protocols - e.g., spanning trees and link aggregations - and updating of certain tables - e.g., address resolution protocol (ARP) and routing tables - are minimized.

    • Aspects for processing data in a server may include receiving a packet and determining a function associated with the packet. A blade server handling the function associated with the packet may be determined and the packet may be steered to that blade server. At least one association may be generated or created between a particular characteristic of a packet and a particular function associated with that packet. At least one blade server may be assigned to handle the particular function associated with a packet. The particular characteristic of the packet may include, for example, a packet type, a field within the packet and/or a flag within a portion of the packet. Steered packets may be processed by one or more blade servers that may be adapted to handle the function associated with the packets. A switch blade may be utilized to control steering of the received packets.
