    • A system is disclosed for determining the positions of a set of points on a vehicle body or frame and comparing those points to a set of reference points provided by the vehicle manufacturer or other source. The system includes a data acquisition apparatus comprised of emitters, receivers, and microprocessor control means. The emitters are mounted at various predetermined positions on the vehicle body or frame and are triggered in an optimal fashion by the microprocessors. Triggering generates a single acoustic burst signal from an emitter. An array of microphones acts as the receiver. After generation of the signal, the microprocessor initializes an external clock which measures the travel time of the signal from the emitter to the receivers. By repeating this process a number of times, data is acquired which yields the three-dimensional coordinates of a given point when processed by a microprocessor. Microprocessors further convert this data into a form that can be used by the overall system to determine the positions of all points measured on the vehicle body or frame. The data is transmitted to an operator display unit where it is plotted graphically. Reference data is inputted into the operator display unit via an optical decoder. This data and a comparison of the two sets of data is displayed. Based on the data comparison, the operator can then determine whether and to what extent repair work or further maintenance work on the automobile body, frame or wheels is necessary.

    • This application discloses a method of determining the relative positions of a plurality of points located substantially in a common plane at or close to the surface of the sea, which method comprises deploying at each of said points an acoustic element comprising an acoustic transmitter and/or an acoustic receiver; sequentially actuating at predetermined time intervals at least a predetermined number of the acoustic transmitters and observing the responses of at least a predetermined number of the acoustic receivers in response thereto, such that all of the acoustic elements are operated at least once, whether in the transmit or receive mode or in both said modes; and subjecting the observed responses to signal processing to derive the spacing between each receiving element and each transmitting element, and hence to derive the relative positions of said points.

    • Method and apparatus for evaluating location (P) of an ! unknown sound generated in a structure (1) such as a pressure vessel. A plurality of sound detectors (S) are mounted on the structure for detecting sounds generated in the structure. On the basis of sound information of the unknown sound source derived from the outputs of the detectors, the location where the unknown sound is produced is determined. To this end, reference sounds (A, B, C, I) are first generated at a plurality of known reference sound source positions, wherein information of the reference sounds derived from the outputs of the detectors are stored in a storage unit (140). Equi-pattern-distance curves each of which is in an equal pattern distance between a supposed unknown sound source and each of the reference sound sources are calculated on the basis of the reference sound information. The equi-pattern-distance curves are further corrected in accordance with the reference sound information. Upon occurrence of an unknown sound, pattern distances between the desired reference sound source positions and the unknown sound source position are calculated through pattern recognition procedure from the sound information derived from the outputs of the detector and the reference sound information stored. On the basis of the calculated pattern distances and the equi-pattern-distance curves, the position of the unknown sound source is determined. On the basis of the position of the unknown sound source, kinetic energy thereof may be arithmetically determined.
