摘要： A control system (10) for an electric motor (19) having an integral flywheel rotor (16). The motor (19) includes a stator (12) mounted co-axially with the engine crankshaft and a rotor (16) surrounding the stator (12). A sensor (30, 32, 34, 36) is positioned near the rotor (16) for sensing its rotational speed. The sensor (30, 32, 34, 36) is coupled to a controller (20). The controller (20) is operable to deliver an output signal to the stator (12) to start the internal combustion engine. While the engine is starting, the processor steps the starter motor (19) from a low speed to a high speed. Once the engine has started and is rotating at a speed greater than a trigger speed, the processor delivers another output signal such that the motor (19) is commutated at a speed that is less than the speed of the rotor (16) to generate a speed slip. By commutating the motor (19) in this manner, it acts as a generator. The speed slip is regulated when the motor (19) is generating electric power so that the motor (19) produces a constant output voltage.

There is provided within an engine housing (28) an oil reservoir (126) and a valve chamber (156) which independently communicate with a crank chamber (124). A strategically placed divider (116) and passageway, located within the engine housing (28), appropriately direct lubricant within the engine housing (28) so that the internal cavity of the engine is lubricated during use in various operating attitudes, and so that the fluid flows to and is held in the proper chambers of the engine housing during storage. There is also provided a breather arrangement for an internal combustion engine (20) which includes a cam shaft (98) having a hollow passageway in communication wit the crank chamber (124) and the air intake system of the engine. 摘要： A motor includes a shaft, at least one bearing, a rotor, a stator, and a brush carrier. The bearing is located adjacent to the shaft. The rotor is interconnected to the shaft and magnetically interacts with the stator. The brush carrier is releasably interconnected to the rotor and/or stator such that the brush carrier can mechanically disconnect from the rotor and/or stator without disturbing a bearing and other motor elements. By disconnecting the brush carrier from an endbell and viewing the commutator surfaces through an endbell aperture, the commutator surfaces of the motor are inspected. Since more than one winding portion of the armature can act as a commutating surface, motor assembly is simplified and the motor has a long useful life. A motor including more than one brush carrier is also provided. Each brush carrier is releasably interconnected to the rotor and/or stator such that either brush carrier can be mechanically disconnected from the rotor and/or stator without disturbing other motor elements.

摘要： An electroplating formulation and process that employs an iron plating/activating bath which acts as both a chemical activation bath to activate the aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate and acts as an electroplating bath for depositing a hard iron layer directly onto the aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate. No separate activation bath, no transitory layers, and no separate undercoating layers are needed. The activation/electroplating bath solution includes the following: (1) Fe+2 having a concentration ranging from about 0.65 to about 2.5 moles per liter of solution; (2) at least one anion associated with the Fe+2 ion; (3) a reducing agent in an amount sufficient to prevent oxidation of Fe?+2 to Fe+3¿; (4) Cl- in an amount sufficient to promote dissolution of the anode and increase the conductivity of the solution; and (5) a wetting agent in an amount sufficient to prevent pitting of the aluminum electroplated surface. The surface of the aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate cathode is activated by immersing the cathode in the solution. An anode is also immersed in the solution. The iron layer is electroplated directly onto the activated aluminum or aluminum alloy surface of the cathode in the bath solution.

摘要： A composite gear includes one or more metal stamped plates (18, 20), and two thermoplastic layers (12, 14) disposed on opposite sides of the plates. Apertures (34) are provided in the stamped metal plates so that the molten thermoplastic material may flow through the apertures and anchor the two thermoplastic layers to each other as well as to the metal plates. The composite gear has composite gear teeth (11) which consist of one or more metal gear teeth portions sandwiched between two thermoplastic gear teeth portions. The thermoplastic gear teeth portions extend outwardly from the metal gear teeth portions so that the thermoplastic teeth portions absorb loads under normal operating conditions. Under abnormal conditions such as when an abrupt stop occurs, the thermoplastic portions of the gear teeth are compressed and the higher torque forces resulting from the abnormal condition are absorbed by the metal gear teeth portions. Unique tooling and manufacturing methods are also described to enable the composite gear to be made without overmolding the metal gear teeth portions.
