    • A method of transporting a desired fluid in a channel includes: providing a working fluid to transport the desired fluid, such as a sample; providing a first segment of a first buffer fluid which is immiscible with the working fluid and the desired fluid; providing a first segment of the desired fluid; providing a second segment of a second buffer fluid which is immiscible with the working fluid and the desired fluid; providing the desired fluid to be transported and further manipulated; and transporting the desired fluid in the channel by applying a motive force to the working fluid which in turn exerts force against the desired fluid through the first and second buffer fluid. The method prevents dilution of a sample in an apparatus such as a diagnostic analyzer or an apparatus for immunohematological testing of blood. A microfluidics handling system includes a microsystem platform that has: a substrate having: a first flat, planar surface; and a second flat planar surface opposite to the first surface. The first surface includes: at least one microchannel; an optional reagent source; an optional reaction chamber; a source of motive force to transport the fluid; a working fluid in the microchannels; a first segment of a first buffer fluid which is immiscible with the working fluid and the desired fluid; a first segment of the desired fluid; a second segment of a second buffer fluid which is immiscible with the working fluid and the desired fluid; and the desired fluid to be transported and further manipulated, wherein the fluid is present in the microchannels in the order of working fluid; first buffer fluid; first segment of the desired fluid, second buffer fluid; and the desired fluid.

    • An analyzer, preferably a desktop analyzer, includes: a first rotor for holding a test element and at least one of a sample reservoir for a sample to be analyzed, a wash reservoir, and a probe tip dispenser; a second rotor arranged concentrically with the first rotor and adapted to receive the test element from the first rotor; an incubator arranged in cooperation with the second rotor to incubate a sample disposed in the second rotor; and a measurement device to analyze a sample located in the second ring. A method of analyzing a sample includes: providing a sample in a sample reservoir and at least one test element on a first rotor; rotating the first rotor to align the sample reservoir with a liquid dispense and aspirating station; aspirating sample from the sample reservoir; rotating the first rotor to align the test element with the liquid dispense and aspirating station; dispensing the sample onto the test element; rotating the first rotor to align the test element with a test element transfer station; and transferring the test element to a second rotor. In a preferred embodiment, the method further includes incubating the test element, rotating the second rotor to bring the test element into cooperation with a measurement device, and measuring the sample with a measurement device.

    • A test element holder for an automated analyzer includes: a body portion for holding at least one test element; and a guide adapted to receive a probe, such as an aspirating or dispense nozzle to position the probe in a desired registration with a test element. In a preferred embodiment, the test element holder further includes a cover disposed over at least a portion of the body portion and test element and the guide comprises at least one opening in said cover. In a preferred embodiment, the analyzer is a desktop analyzer and/or a veterinary analyzer. A method of dispensing or aspirating a fluid into or onto a test element includes: providing a test element having identifying marks thereon; providing a stationary probe; providing a cover disposed over at least a portion of test element, wherein said cover has a plurality of openings adapted to receive the probe to position the probe in a desired registration with the test element; reading the identifying marks to determine which test is to be performed; and moving the test element and cover into a position to align one of the plurality of holes into alignment with the probe depending on the test to be performed.
