    • The invention relates to a filtering apparatus including, inside a filtering tower (1), a filtering section (r), a liquid collecting section (7) and a liquid feeding section (e). The liquid feeding section (e) includes a diffuser (A) attached to an upwardly oriented orifice (5a) formed at a leading end of a liquid feeding pipe (5). The object is to provide an apparatus which allows use of the existing filtering tower without its enlargement and which allows uniform falling of the filtering liquid over the substantially entire top surface of the filter medium layer, thus making it readily possible to maintain the flatness of the top surface of the filter medium layer even when light-weight medium is employed, thereby to allow the filter medium layer as well as the entire filtering apparatus to achieve their desired filtering performance. The diffuser (A) includes a damping portion (k) for damping the momentum of the liquid discharged from the orifice (5a), a first discharging portion (8) for upwardly discharging the liquid damped by the damping portion (k), a second discharging portion (9) for laterally discharging the liquid damped by the damping portion (k), and a third discharging portion (10) for downwardly discharging the liquid damped by the damping portion (k), said first, second and third discharging portions being stacked one on another from the top to the bottom in the mentioned order.

    • The invention is related to a method and a device for purifying rain or ground water contaminated with liquid organic compounds. The invention is characterised in that the contaminated water mixture is discharged to a purifying container (7) comprising a number of plate-shaped bodies (4) containing an absorbent, such as peat, which are placed onto each other and separated by layers (bottoms) (5) or plastics, such as HDPE, which are perforated over the cross section in order to spread the fluid to be purified over the complete absorbent/peat surface (5), wherein said fluid organic compounds are absorbed and the rain/ground water is led further.

The scrubbing action transfers the contaminants from the filter media into the scrub water and thereby enables the contaminants to be removed from the vessel by discharging the scrub water therefrom.

    • A flume distribution system includes a distributor having a stationary lower portion and a removable upper portion. The lower portion defines a duct which is in fluid communication with a flume and at least one underdrain lateral. The lower portion also includes an apertured end wall which abuts one of the underdrain laterals at a lateral inlet, and a stop is disposed within the duct and spaced from the end wall. The duct receives a removable orifice plate which is adapted to pivot between a slant inactive position abutting the stop and an upright active position restricting the aperture in the end wall. During backwash operations, water is introduced to the flume and enters each duct in the lower portion of the distributor, and the pressure of the incoming water causes the orifice plate to pivot from the slant position to the upright position, reducing the cross-sectional area of the aperture in the end wall and thereby regulating the velocity of backwash flow from the flume into the lateral inlet. The orifice plate is held in place by a pressure differential across the plate, but it returns to the slant inactive position during filtration when flow through the system is reversed. The upper portion of the distributor may be removed as needed to place different sized orifice plates within the ducts for obtaining uniform backwash distribution.
