    • A metal member, such as a metal mold (1), can be securely repaired by a welding machine and an arc melting machine. A proper volume of fine welding powder or a thin sheet-type welding material (3) is provided on the portion of the metal member (1) to be repaired. A primary electrode (8) of the welding machine (P) is pressed to a portion of the welding powder or the welding material. A large pulse current of 300-1500 amperes is applied to the primary electrode for a short period of 1/1000-4/1000 seconds to form dot-shaped welded metal nuggets (6) on the metal member, which nuggets are made to couple or overlap continuously with other plural welded metal nuggets. Thus, a build-up welding with nuggets, lines of nuggets or layers of nuggets is established and the welded portion has a desired thickness in a desired area of the portion to be repaired. The build-up welded portion of the metal member to be repaired is enveloped in an inactive gas atmosphere (30). A primary electrode (10) of the arc-melting machine (Q) is positioned at a place adjacent to the build-up welded portion and the arc melting machine applies the arc to the build-up portion for a short period so as to melt the welded metal again. The excess build-up welded portion is removed after the build-up welded portion is solidified and the repair is finalized by grounding.

    • Spark-depositing apparatus for coating a workpiece with a metallic layer has an electrode store (27) for storing a plurality of electrode rods (1a) and a chuck (29) supported by a support member (2a) defining an electrode guide passage (30) for receiving each unconsumed electrode rod from the store (27). The chuck (2a) has a clamp assembly (31, 31a, 32 and 33) and is movable between an open position in which an electrode rod (1a) can slide through the chuck (2a) and a closed position in which the electrode rod (1a) is clamped in the chuck (29). The apparatus includes a first drive for relatively displacing the support member (2a) and the workpiece (5) to cause a localized spark-deposit of the substance of the electrode rod (1a) onto selected regions of the workpiece (5) and a second drive for relatively displacing the support member (2a) and the workpiece (5) towards and away from each other so as to maintain the spacing between the electrode rod (1a) and the workpiece (5) substantially constant.
      A command means generates a command signal to halt the first and second drives when electrode consumption reaches a predetermined value. A control associated with the clamp assembly responds to the command signal to open and so allow the remnants of the electrode rod to be released, and thereafter to close, to clamp the following unconsumed electrode rod (1a) in position.
