    • A rotary motor and a rotary magnetic bearing are integrated in a compact assembly (10) that is contactless. A stator assembly (16) surrounds a ferromagnetic rotor (18) with an annular air gap (20) which can accommodate a cylindrical wall (12e), e.g. of a chamber (12), for semiconductor wafer (14) processing. The stator assembly (16) has a permanent magnet or magnets (38) sandwiched between vertically spaced magnetic stator plates (36) with plural pole segments (36a). The rotor (18) is preferably a ring of magnetic stainless steel with complementary pole teeth (18c). The stator assembly (16) levitates and passively centres the rotor (18) along a vertical axis and against tilt about the either horizontal axis (26,28), provides a radial position bias for the rotor (18), and establishes a motor flux field at a the rotor poles (18c). Polyphase coils (40) wound on the stator plates (36) produce a rotating flux field that drives the rotor (18) as a synchronous homopolar motor. A controller (54) energizes control coils (42) wound on each stator pole segment (36a) in response to a sensed physical position of the rotor (18) and can actively damp oscillations that may overcome the passive centering.

    • A generator or a 3-phase motor is arranged to provide multipolar permanent magnet excitation in combination with multipolar reluctance distribution wherein different numbers of poles are used for the permanent magnet excitation and for the reluctance distribution so that the principal working flux has a finite waveform. An annular rotor 11 rotates about a cruciform stator 10. The magnets 16 are buried in pole pieces 14 of the stator 10 so they converge radially inwardly with a triangular pole piece 17 between them. Each pole piece 17 is joined to the remainder of the stator 10 by a bridge piece 18. The inner periphery of the rotor 11 is formed as a circumferential array of teeth 12 separated by recesses 13. The rotor may be within an annular stator or the machine may be linear.

    • A flywheel energy conversion device provides highly efficient conversion between kinetic and electrical energy. The flywheel produces increased output by providing armature coils in an air gap formed about the flywheel (both radial and axial embodiments are described). In preferred embodiments, field coils of a magnetic circuit are energized with DC drive current that creates homopolar flux within a rotating solid rotor having teeth cut from a flat disk. The total reluctance of the magnetic circuit and total flux remain substantially constant as the rotor rotates. The flux may travel radially outward and exit the flat disk through the teeth passing across an armature air gap. Airgap armature coils are preferably utilized in which the changing flux density (due to the rotating teeth) induces an output voltage in the coils. The flux is diffused before returning to the rotor in one of several ways such that core losses are effectively reduced, thereby enabling the flywheel to operate efficiently at high frequencies.
