    • An apparatus and method uses a pair of transducers, such as lasers, mounted on the tire/wheel assembly of a moving vehicle for measuring the actual angles of camber experienced by the vehicle tire as the vehicle moves along an actual road surface. The pair of lasers are mounted in a predetermined horizontal spaced relationship on a bracket mounted on and extending perpendicularly outwardly from a non-rotating hub mounted on the tire/wheel assembly. The reflected laser beams from the pair of lasers are continually measured as the vehicle moves along the road surface. The reflected beams determine the change in spacings of the two lasers above the road surface from which can be calculated the angles of camber continuously imparted on the tire/wheel assembly. This data is collected and stored in a computer located in the vehicle and captures the tire's operating camber angles with respect to an actual road surface when used on a particular vehicle. The stored data is later supplied to tire test equipment at a remote test facility to duplicate the actual road camber experienced on the test tire on other test tires at the test facility to simulate the real-world environment for a particular tire on a particular vehicle without repeating the more costly tests on the actual moving vehicle at a remote test track.

    • A monitoring device (14) and patch (16) combination used to monitor the conditions of a pneumatic tire having an innerliner includes a monitoring device and a patch. The monitoring device includes at least one sensing element (18) that is adapted to sense a condition of the pneumatic tire. The monitoring device also includes a first electrical pad connected to the sensing element. The monitoring device and first electrical pad (26) are preferably encapsulated in an encapsulation material (30). The patch (16) is adapted to carry the monitoring device (14) and mount the monitoring device on the innerliner of the tire. An antenna (34) is embedded within the patch and a second electrical pad (36) is connected to the antenna. The monitoring device is disposed on the patch in a manner such that the first and second electrical pads are aligned to provide electrical coupling between the pads. The antenna (34) is in communication with the sensing element (18) through the electrical coupling between the pads. The monitoring device and patch may be manufactured in separate facilities and then brought together when they are connected to the innerliner of the tire without the requirement of a physical connection between the sensing element and the antenna.

In one embodiment, the device is a tire tag mounted inside a tire that measures tire data and transmits that data to a remote source in response to an interrogation request, an alert condition, or automatically on a periodic basis.

    • An attachment (30) between a monitoring device (32) and an innerliner of a tire (10) includes the use of an epoxy adhesive that bonds the monitoring device (32) directly to the inner surface (26) of the innerliner (24) of the tire. The innerliner (24) is first roughened in a manner that provides a roughened portion of the innerliner without removing the entire thickness of the innerliner. The entire thickness of the innerliner is not removed because the innerliner is preferably more than 1/16 of an inch thick. The thickness of the innerliner allows the rigid cured epoxy to bond the monitoring device to the inner surface of the innerliner while allowing the innerliner to flex with the tire so as to not break the seal between the rigid epoxy and the innerliner. The monitoring device is preferably located at a low flex area (28) of the tire to help avoid the problem of the innerliner flexing.
