    • A semiconductor laser-excited solid-state laser device which is constituted by mounting a sub-mount, an LD bar, and a light guiding duct on the LD package main body of a semiconductor laser and inserting the emitting section of the LD bar into the light guiding duct. Then a gold-metallized insulating plate is welded to one side of the LD package main body and the LD bar and gold-metallized part are connected by wire bonding. The light guiding duct is constructed so that the duct can directly transmit exciting light to a laser medium and the periphery of the laser medium can be surrounded by a light condenser. When an electric current is made to flow to a cathode from the LD package main body, the LD bar emits LD exciting light and the laser medium is excited, resulting in laser oscillation. Therefore, a highly reliable and highly efficient LD-excited solid-state laser device which can be assembled easily and can be manufactured at a low cost can be obtained.

    • A diode pumped laser includes a resonator mirror and an output coupler, defining a laser resonator with a resonator optical axis. A strong thermal lens laser crystal with a TEM00 mode diameter is mounted in the resonator along the resonator optical axis. A diode pump source supplies a pump beam to the laser crystal in the laser resonator, and produces an output beam with a diameter larger that the TEM00 mode diameter to reduce thermal birefringence. A power source supplies power to the diode pump source. A polarizing element can be positioned in the resonator, along with an aperture stop. The laser operates well over a large range of pump powers. Its slope efficiency in the TEM00 mode is greater than 40 %, with an overall efficiency greater than 25 %. One of the lasing crystals used is Nd:YVO4. This material exhibits high gain and a short upper state lifetime. These properties make it attractive in designing a Q-switched laser, or one that is insensitive to optical feedback. Another material is Nd:YAG. The technique of optimizing the pump beam spot size is found to minimize loss due to thermal birefringence.
