    • There are described image-recording materials which include an image dye-providing compound comprising a novel naphthol azo cyan dye having a 3-aminobenzoisothiazole moiety. The image dye-providing compound includes a diffusion control moiety such as a hydroquinonyl developer group, a precursor thereof or a thiazolidine moiety and, may be diffusible or nondiffusible as a function of the diffusion control moiety. Image-recording materials according to the invention including those which contain high potential developers such as aminoreductone allow sufficient cyan chromophore to diffuse to the image-receiving layer to provide an acceptable photograph and result in no appreciable reduction of the 3-aminobenzoisothiazole moiety of the novel naphthol azo cyan dye.

    • A bouncing ball scanner is described which is a ball driven in a reciprocal motion for reflecting image-bearing light onto a photosensitive medium. The image-bearing light can be dictated by a computer, in which case the photosensitive medium may be film for a printed output, or the image-bearing light may be reflected from a subject having an image imprinted thereon, and the photosensitive medium may be a charge coupled device where the image is being read into a computer. The bouncing ball scanner comprises a ball being driven in a reciprocal motion by electromagnetic forces acting thereon. The motion of the bouncing ball is substantially linear in each direction so as to allow ease of calculation of ball position thereby ease of knowledge of pixel position on the photosensitive medium.

    • The present invention is useful in taking images for identification and other purposes without the requirement of a photobooth, regardless of the background of the image. The original background of the image is replaced with a preselected background. Two IR images with different intensities of IR illumination in the foreground and background regions of the scene, respectively, are compared for light intensity differences between corresponding pixels of the two images to form a mask differentiating between the foreground and background regions of the image. The mask is then applied to a visible light image of the scene and the preselected background is used to replace the original background.

    • A system for filtering an image during data compression using a standard JPEG compression/decompression chip typically requires a separate spatial filter external to the chip. The spatial filter is composed of numerous shift registers, flip-flops, multipliers and at least one adder. In contrast, an image filtering system which filters in the frequency domain using the inventive JPEG compression chip modified for filtering in the frequency domain does not require the separate spatial filter and its many components. The modified JPEG chip includes a raster to block converter which converts an image signal into 8x8 blocks, a DCT processor which converts the 8x8 blocks into DCT coefficients, a multiplier which generates filtered DCT coefficients by multiplying predetermined filtering coefficients times the DCT coefficients, a quantizer which generates quantized blocks to a predetermined level stored in a visibility table by quantizing the filtered coefficients, a zigzag scanner which generates a vector having the same number of elements as the quantized blocks, a run-length coder for determining the appropriate run-length according to entropy encoding received from a preloaded Huffman table, and a variable length code packer/unpacker for compressing the entropy encoded vector. A block to raster converter is included to reformat decompressed data.
