    • According to various aspects of the invention, a transducer is manufactured by providing a substrate assembly, making major element cuts in the substrate assembly in a first direction, making minor element cuts in the substrate assembly in a second direction, positioning a plurality of signal lines (such as a flex circuit) on the substrate assembly such that the plurality of signal lines is aligned with said minor element cuts, and making major element cuts in the substrate assembly in the second direction after said plurality of signal lines is positioned. Various aspects of the invention also include a multi-dimensional transducer having a plurality of elements, wherein the transducer includes a conductor; a piezoelectric assembly assembled with said conductor and having a first plurality of cuts in a first direction; and a matching layer assembly having a second plurality of aperture cuts in the first direction, wherein the matching layer is coupled to the conductor opposite the piezoelectric assembly such that the first and second pluralities of elevation cuts are aligned to isolate the plurality of elements in an elevation dimension.

    • Various piezoelectric transducers are provided. In one form, a polymer film or thin ceramic piezoelectric transducer is formed of various piezoelectric (active) and dielectric (inactive) layers in which the piezoelectric effect may be attenuated locally at any given point on the surface of the transducer, by use of printed circuit patterns, preferably made by photolithography. This provides a practical realization of a distributed piezoelectric transducer with a bi-dimensional polarization profile that varies smoothly over the surface of the piezoelectric structure. Flexibility of the fabrication procedure provides a way to optimize the design of a distributed piezoelectric transducer for applications such as active vibration control. In another form, a segmented piezoelectric transducer includes a set of active elements such as piezofilms, electronics and flexible printed circuits and connected with external electronic circuitry. The segmented piezoelectric transducer uses a modulation scheme to combine the individual sensor outputs. Modal coordinates may be extracted from a test structure on which the segmented piezoelectric transducer is attached. As well, it is possible to use a distributed piezoelectric transducer to actuate a structure by using a time-varying polarization profile.

    • Piezoelectric transformers have a number of favorable characteristics over traditional electromagnetic tranformers. However, the construction of piezoelectric transformers tends to be complicated, which may result in increasing manufacturing cost. Furthermore, such complex constructions may raise difficulties in the miniaturization of such devices. A ring-shaped piezoelectric transformer is developed in this invention for low voltage applications. One surface of the transformer is covered by two disc or ring-shaped electrodes separated by a ring-shaped separating segment, and the regions covered by the disc or ring-shaped electrodes served as the input and output parts of the transformer. This transformer may be fabricated relatively easily due to its simple structure. Furthermore, its size and thickness may be reduced relatively easily without increasing the difficulty of the fabricating process. The transformer may be used separately or in parallel.
