    • A drill bit is disclosed for maintaining a desired direction of drilling or to reduce the deviation already established. The drill bit includes a plurality of legs with each leg having a cone cutter rotatively supported thereon. A plurality of annular rows of cutting inserts are circumferentially mounted on the conical surface of each cutter. Each cone cutter further includes a heel portion adjacent the base of the conical surface. The heel portion is of sufficient mass to support the gage row of cutting elements. The gage row of each cone extends further out from the cone axis than any of the intermediate adjacent rows in such a manner that the annular area of the hole bottom cut by the gage inserts is lower than any other area cut by the intermediate rows of cutting inserts. This extended gage row construction enables the gage inserts to cut into any sloping wall to produce a sharp corner and bring the hole back into line with the drill string. The cutting inserts of each gage row include relatively large cutting faces in the direction of the sidewalls of the bore hole in order to have substantial surface contact with the gage of the bore hole.

    • A drill tool for drilling earth, rock, and the like in oil industry operations includes a body member having a passage in a pin portion thereof and extending longitudinally of the body member and between an open or fluid receiving end and a closed end and a plurality of circumferentially spaced arms or lugs extending generally longitudinally from the closed end of the passage in the body member and each having an axle portion thereon for rotatably mounting a respective one of a plurality of cutting cones each rotating about a respective axis intersecting with a longitudinal axis of the body member to define a respective acute angle therebetween. The drill tool has at least one flow passage through one of the arms or lugs for directing drilling fluid from the passage in the body member into the drill hole for sweeping the drill hole and removing drilling debris therefrom. Exterior surfaces of the axle portions each have a reservoir and at least one passage communicating therewith and extending to the respective exterior surface for circulating lubrication material within a cavity in the respective cutting cones and having seals thereby providing lubrication of engaging surfaces of the axle portions and cutting cones.

    • A lubricant reservoir is positioned in each arm of a three cone rotary rock bit to provide lubricant to bearings located between the bit''s rotary cone cutters and the bearing shafts upon which the cutters rotate. A seal is positioned between the cutters and the bearing shafts to retain lubricant in the bearing area and to prevent borehole fluids and debris from entering the bearing area. A pressure equalizing passage provides communication between the lubricant reservoir and the outside of the bit. A two-way valve is positioned in the pressure equalizing passage to prevent excessive pressure differentials from building up between lubricant in the lubricant reservoir and fluid outside of the bit by allowing lubricant from the lubricant reservoir to escape to the outside of the bit and allowing fluid outside of the bit to enter the lubricant reservoir.
