    • A drill bit is disclosed for maintaining a desired direction of drilling or to reduce the deviation already established. The drill bit includes a plurality of legs with each leg having a cone cutter rotatively supported thereon. A plurality of annular rows of cutting inserts are circumferentially mounted on the conical surface of each cutter. Each cone cutter further includes a heel portion adjacent the base of the conical surface. The heel portion is of sufficient mass to support the gage row of cutting elements. The gage row of each cone extends further out from the cone axis than any of the intermediate adjacent rows in such a manner that the annular area of the hole bottom cut by the gage inserts is lower than any other area cut by the intermediate rows of cutting inserts. This extended gage row construction enables the gage inserts to cut into any sloping wall to produce a sharp corner and bring the hole back into line with the drill string. The cutting inserts of each gage row include relatively large cutting faces in the direction of the sidewalls of the bore hole in order to have substantial surface contact with the gage of the bore hole.

    • A rock bit for drilling hard formations has a bit body with a plurality of rolling cone cutters mounted on it for rotation with rotation of the bit body. The cutters each have a plurality of recesses in their outer surfaces and a tungsten carbide insert is interference fitted into each of said recesses. A large diameter rock bit has such inserts larger than about 3/4 inch diameter and a cavity is provided in the cylindrical base of such an insert. The cavity has a volume in the range of from about 15 to 30% of the volume of the cylindrical base and extends into the cylindrical base a distance of at least about 40% of the diameter of the base. The depth of the recess is more than half of the length of the portion of the insert that grips the recess in which it is inserted. Large savings in expensive tungsten carbide can be made without decreasing performance of the tungsten carbide inserts.

    • A lubrication failure detection system for utilization with an earth boring drilling system having at least one rotary drill bit coupled to a drill string, the drill string having an internal passage adapted to receive drilling fluid under pressure. A lubrication reservoir is disposed near said rotary drill bit and coupled to bearing surfaces within said rotary drill bit by a lubrication passageway. A flexible membrane separates the lubrication reservoir from drilling fluid within the annulus formed by the rotary drill bit and distends inward in response to the pressure of the drilling fluid. The distention of the membrane forces lubricant into the lubrication passageway and when the membrane has distended to a selected point, the membrane actuates a mechanism which opens an orifice into the internal passage of the drill string, thereby abruptly decreasing the pressure of the drilling fluid within the drill string. The system also includes means for detecting this pressure drop, thereby indicating the imminent failure of lubrication within the system. In an alternate embodiment, the system includes means for selectively closing the aforementioned orifice to permit additional operation of the drilling system after imminent lubrication failure has been indicated.

    • A rock bit for recovering core samples is described, along with variations for drilling oil wells or the like. In each of these embodiments a plurality of diamond cutters are mounted on the bit body for cutting rock by a shearing action. Each diamond cutter is in the form of a thin diamond plate bonded to a carbide slug that is inserted into the bit body. Means are also provided for limiting the depth of penetration of the diamond cutters into the rock formation being drilled preferably in the form of rolling cone cutters having a plurality of carbide insects protruding from their surfaces. The protrusion of the carbide inserts from the surface of the cutter cones is less than the length of the diamond plate. This limits the depth that the diamond can penetrate in the rock and inhibits damage. Typically the diamond cutters are mounted for cutting one portion of the hole area by shearing action and the rolling cone cutters are mounted for cutting another portion of its area by chipping-crushing action.

    • An improved seal assembly for utilization with earth boring drilling bits employing roller cutters. The improved seal is constructed utilizing two resilient O-rings or other resilient seals engaging opposing surfaces in the roller cutter and the corner formed by the shaft and face of the cutter support. The O-rings are mounted in and separated by a flexible floating ring of slightly harder material than the O-ring material. The flexible floating ring may be coated with or made from a material which provides a low coefficient of friction, permitting the O-rings to rotate therein. In an alternate embodiment of the present invention the flexible floating ring is tapered so that increased loading of the earth boring drilling bit will result in increased compression of the resilient O-rings, thus improving the seal under high load conditions. The improved seal of the present invention will accommodate substantial radial, axial and angular displacements of the roller cutter while satisfactorily inhibiting the ingress of detritus and the egress of lubricant.
