    • A rough cutter rotary mining tool formed of a support lug having an elongated, open ended, cylindrical bore and a cutter bit having a cylindrical shank portion extending through and loosely fitted within the bore, with the cutter head portion extending a distance beyond the forward end of the bore. An integral shoulder portion is arranged between the head and shank portions for engaging the lug at the forward end of the bore and a removable retaining clip is mounted upon the free end of the shank portion for engaging the rear end of the lug at the bore. The shank portion is loosely movable endwise a short distance relative to the bore. Also, the diameter of the shank portion is considerably smaller than the bore portion to form a space therebetween and so that the shank may easily rotate within and move transversely of the bore. Thus, small sand-like particles may pass through the bore around the shank during use of the tool.

    • This invention resides in providing a resilient, ring-like member between a work tool and a work tool holder so as, in many cases, to permit relative motion, axial and/or rotative, between them. The work tool and work tool holder are intended for use primarily in connection with mining, excavating and earth working machines and the like. The work tool may comprise elongated elements having a shank portion with a working tip at one end and a gauge-determining abutment surface at at least the other end. The work tool holders may comprise bodies having a shank receiving perforation and means in association with the bottom of the perforation having an abutment adapted to cooperate with the abutment on the work tool. The ring-like member may be positioned in a groove on the work tool with a portion thereof adapted to abut some part of the work tool holder or it may be located in a groove in the work tool holder with a portion thereof adapted to engage a shallow depression or the like in the work tool. The resiliency and shape of the ring-like member permits the work tool to be forced into the work tool holder whereafter it will often be movable with respect thereto but captively held. The ring-like member may be formed of metal or plastic and may have a variety of shapes, for the most part, however, having a generally cylindrical, at least in part, configuration. The working portion of this resilient, generally cylindrical, ring-like retainer is capable of axial elongation whereby to present a knock-in, pryout relationship between the work tool and work tool holder.

    • Resilient retaining means for securing work tools either rotatable or non-rotatable, in appropriate work tools holders or mounting means. The work tools and holders are intended primarily for use on mining, excavating and earth working machines and the like. The work tools comprise elongated elements having a shank portion with a working tip at one end and a gauge-determining abutment surface at at least the other end. The holders or mounting means comprise bodies having a shank receiving perforation and means in association with the bottom of the perforation having an abutment surface adapted to cooperate with the abutment surface on the work tool. Either the work tool or the holder, and in a few cases, both, is provided with a recess to receive a resilient retaining means, usually, in the present invention, a special form of spring clip, to frictionally retain the work tool in the holder against longitudinal movement. In some cases the spring clip will be captive in the holder and will frictionally engage the work tool shank portion in such manner that the work tool will be non-rotatable in the shank receiving portion of the holder. In other cases the spring clip will also be captive in the holder and will also frictionally engage the shank but both the shank and retainer will rotate together with respect to the perforation. And in still other cases the spring clip will be captive on the shank, in a particular manner, and will frictionally engage the lug, the work tool usually being rotatable within the clip and perforation. Some of the clips may be arranged to either permit or prevent rotation of the work tool in the perforation. Various configurations and characteristics will be given these clips, such as special shapes, surfaces and twists.

    • A retainer clip for tool bits comprises an annular strip having circumferentially spaced ends defining a gap therebetween. A pair of proximate projections and at least one remote projection project outwardly from the strip. The proximate projections are located on opposite sides of the gap. The proximate projections include positively oriented front surfaces, and the remote projection includes a non-positively oriented front surface disposed longitudinally rearwardly relative to forwardmost portions of the front surfaces of the proximate projections. Upon forward displacement of the clip within the hole of a holder, contact occurs between the proximate projections and a wall of a retaining groove of the holder to produce radial shifting of the gap of the clip toward the axis of the bit. Removal of the bit from the hole is possible only by shearing the remote projection.

    • Mounting means for cutting tools of the type having an elongated shank of circular cross section, a hard cutting tip at one end and an abutment surface at the other end. The mounting means comprises a body having a forward surface, a rearward surface and a shank receiving perforation extending through the body from the forward surface to the rearward surface. The shank receiving perforation is of such diameter as to permit free rotation of the cutting tool shank therein and is of such length that the abutment end of the cutting tool shank extends beyond the rear surface of the body. The body is mounted on a driven element of a mining machine. An abutment means is provided in association with the driven element, the abutment means presenting an abutment surface cooperating with the abutment surface on the cutting tool shank and spaced from the rear surface of the mounting means body.
