    • An improved downhole tool apparatus for limiting the extrusion of a packer element. The apparatus includes a packer mandrel having a packer element assembly disposed in a wellbore. Packer retaining shoes are disposed about the packer mandrel at the ends of the packer element assembly. The packer retaining shoes have an inner retainer and an outer retainer. The inner retainer has a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that expand in width when the retaining shoe is moved from an initial position in which it is disposed about the packer mandrel to an expanded position wherein it engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The outer retainer is likewise made up of a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that will expand. The inner retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the outer retainer segments and the outer retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the inner retainer segments so that extrusion is limited. The retaining shoes provide enhanced high temperature and higher pressure performance in that extrusion in wells having high temperature and high pressure is severely limited if not completely prevented.

    • A two-stage packer and method for sealing an annulus in a wellbore is provided. The packer may be set by a force which will not cause a sealing element to buckle, collapse, or otherwise fail. In one aspect, the packer comprises a body having a sealing element and shoulder disposed there-around, and a slideable member slideably arranged on the body, the slideable member having a first surface disposable beneath the element to increase the inner diameter thereof and a second surface disposable against an end of the element to increase the outer diameter thereof. The method comprises running a body into the wellbore, the body comprising a sealing element and a slideable member slideably disposed there-around, wherein the slideable member comprises a first surface and a second surface; forcing the first surface beneath the element to increase the inner diameter thereof; and forcing the second surface against an end of the element to increase the outer diameter thereof.

    • A high-load slip system allows better transmission of loads from the slips to the body. The cone comprises longitudinal slots and the body comprises tabs which are disposed in those slots. The load is transferred from the slips to the cone and into the tabs which reside in the slots. The arrangement can be configured to share the load between the tabs extending from the body and the actual body itself after a small amount of collapse on the cone, leaving the body to support the cone, both through the tabs and on the outside diameter.

    • A hydrostatically set packer is disclosed. The actuating piston is locked for run in by a lock sleeve and lock dog arrangement. When the desired depth is reached well pressure is built up to break a rupture disc to allow hydrostatic pressure to act on one side of a lock sleeve. The other side of the lock sleeve is exposed to a chamber under atmospheric or low pressure. Movement of the lock sleeve releases the lock dog allowing piston movement to set the packer. The lock sleeve has a labyrinth seal so that seal leakage below a predetermined level will not prematurely activate the piston lock and prematurely set the packer. A variety of designs for the labyrinth are described.

    • A packing tool assembly for sealing oil well bores that basically includes an elongated tubular member, two deformable sealing units, two stopper ring members and a cylinder member. A setting tool transports the packing tool assembly and the former stays in the oil well bore during the preparation and sealing phases without requiring the typical time-consuming withdrawal. When the preparation phase has been completed, the packing tool assembly is disengaged from setting tool and the sealing phase starts immediately. The latch members of the setting tool are received within the internal locking channels of the cylinder member. The setting tool is then rotated to cause the cylinder member to advance towards stopper ring members, deforming outwardly the sealing units. The latter are expanded against the walls of oil well bore. Once expanded the sealing units, the setting tool is removed and a tool for the extraction phase is inserted. By expanding the sealing units, the oil is forced to flow through the filter avoiding sand and mud.

    • A hydraulic anchor packer for use in a well bore having an inflatable packer element (36) with a cylinder 38 and an elastomer sleeve 44 is provided on the exterior surface thereof. The elastomer sleeve 44 is retained by a suitable adhesive or fixing agent adjacent the cylinder 38 at the end portions of the elastomer sleeve 44 but is free of the cylinder 38 intermediate the end portions. An aperture 48 is defined by the wall of the cylinder 38 and is for connecting the exterior of the cylinder 38 in a region where the elastomer sleeve 44 is free of the interior of the cylinder 38. The anchor packer also has a seat 60 and a drop ball 62 for causing fluid from within the cylinder 38 to flow through the aperture 48 and between the elastomer sleeve 44 and exterior surface of the cylinder 38. The seat 60 and drop ball 62 are also for trapping fluid which has flowed into the chamber between the elastomer sleeve 44 and the cylinder 38 so as to prevent relaxation of the elastomer sleeve 44. The hydraulic anchor packer can be used in both cased and uncased well bores.

    • A system for individually controlling the inflation and deflation of individual packers mounted on a casing is disclosed. The system includes a packer valve (36) mounted on the casing (24). The valve is in fluid communication with one of the packers (28). A probe (124) is movable within the casing to access packer valve to inflate or deflate the related packer (28). The packer valve includes a body having a bore (40), a valve closure conduit (42) and a valve opening conduit (44), each in communication with the bore. In one embodiment, the valve further includes a packer inlet/outlet conduit (50) connecting the bore to the packer, and a packer/valve conduit (54) in communication with the bore (40) and the packer inlet/outlet conduit. In another embodiment, the bore is directly communicated with the interior of the packer. The packer valve also includes a valve pin (41) reciprocatably mounted in the bore. The probe (124) has a valve opening fluid line that, when connected to the valve opening conduit, causes the valve pin to move to a valve open position. When in the packer valve open position, the packer can be inflated or deflated by continuing to apply fluid pressure to the valve opening conduit or removing fluid pressure therefrom, to inflate or deflate the packer. The probe has a valve closing fluid line that, when connected to the valve closure conduit, causes the valve pin to move to a valve closed position and prevent the inflation or deflation of the packer.
