    • The present invention provides a tool and methods of placing a treatment fluid in a subterranean formation penetrated by a well bore by way of selected perforations extending from casing cemented in the well bore into the formation. The fluid placement tool includes a fluid flow passageway extending therethrough, at least one resilient self expandable cup type packer attached thereto and a valve disposed in the fluid flow passageway which closes the passageway when a closing plug is dropped into the tool. The placement tool is capable of releasing the cup type packer whereby it provides a seal between the tool and the casing when a first predetermined fluid pressure is applied to the tool after a closing plug is dropped therein and opening the fluid flow passageway whereby the treatment fluid is discharged from the tool below the packer when the fluid pressure is increased to a second predetermined fluid pressure. Methods of using the tool are also provided.

    • An improved downhole tool apparatus for limiting the extrusion of a packer element. The apparatus includes a packer mandrel having a packer element assembly disposed in a wellbore. Packer retaining shoes are disposed about the packer mandrel at the ends of the packer element assembly. The packer retaining shoes have an inner retainer and an outer retainer. The inner retainer has a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that expand in width when the retaining shoe is moved from an initial position in which it is disposed about the packer mandrel to an expanded position wherein it engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The outer retainer is likewise made up of a plurality of segments having gaps therebetween that will expand. The outer retainer engages the wellbore to limit the extrusion of the packer element assembly. The inner retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the outer retainer segments and the outer retainer segments cover the gaps that exist between the inner retainer segments so that extrusion is limited. The packer retaining shoes also include a wedge disposed about the packer mandrel at the upper and lower ends of the packer element assembly. The retaining shoes provide enhanced high temperature and higher pressure performance in that extrusion in wells having high temperature and high pressure is severely limited if not completely prevented.

    • A spherical valve member type having a drill pipe tester valve and a moving apparatus to provide for moving the spherical valve member axially relative to the housing between its said open and closed positions, thereby permitting downward forces exerted upon the spherical valve member in its said closed position due to fluid pressure in the well test string above the spherical valve member, to be transmitted substantially entirely to the housing through the engagement of the downward facing surface of the lower valve seat structure and the upward facing surface of the housing. A latch device is provided for latching the spherical valve member in its closed position as the well test string is lowered into the well and for subsequently releasing the spherical valve member and allowing it to move to its open position when the well test string is finally positioned within the well. A resilient means is provided to prevent movement of the spherical valve member to its open position until a predetermined force is applied to the tester valve. A pressure compensating piston assembly is provided to compensate for the volume decrease of the tester valve during actuation thereof. Upon picking up the well test string the latching device provides a safety valve feature by moving the spherical valve member back to its closed position.

    • A packer apparatus for sealing between a tubing string and a casing in a wellbore is disclosed. The packer apparatus includes a seal assembly disposed about a packer mandrel. Upper and lower seal wedges are disposed about the packer mandrel above and below the seal assembly and may be inserted between the seal assembly and the packer mandrel to radially expand the seal assembly into engagement with the casing. The seal assembly includes an expandable elastomeric seal element having anti-extrusion bridge elements disposed in recesses at the upper and lower ends thereof. The anti-extrusion elements form an almost complete circle and thus are arcuately shaped having first and second ends with a gap therebetween. The anti-extrusion bridge elements are preferably automatically radially retractable elements so that when the seal wedges are removed from between the seal assembly and the packer mandrel, the automatically radially retractable anti-extrusion elements will apply a radially inwardly directed force sufficient to cause the seal assembly to radially retract and close around the packer mandrel.
