    • A rubber derivative comprises a coordination compound of a natural or syntheticrubber containing double bonds and/or epoxy or other groups containing an electronegative atom or atoms and preferably having a weight average molecular weight of from 20,000 to 90,000, more preferably, 20,000 to 85,000, especially about 80,000, with an alkali or alkaline earth metal. The derivatives may be made by dissolving a rubber containing double bonds and/or epoxy or other groups containing an electronegative atom or atoms and having at least a component with a weight average molecular weight in the range of from 20,000 to 90,000, more preferably, 20,000 to 85,000, especially about 80,000, in a polar solvent, adding to the solution an at least equivalent amount of powdered alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or carbonate, optionally together with a desiccant, if the solvent is not water-free, stirring the mixture until a coordination compound between the rubber and the metal atoms had formed and separating the coordination compound from the solvent.

    • A hydrogenation catalyst comprising (A) a transition metal compound in which a group having a heterocyclic skeleton is bonded to Ti, Zr or Hf through an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom, a representative of which compound is bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium bis(tetrahydrofurfuryloxy) and (B) an organic compound, halide or hydride of a metal of Groups I to III of the Periodic Table or comprising the constituent (A), the constituent (B) and (C) a polar, organic compound such as an alcohol, a carboxylic acid or the like. The above catalyst has a very high catalytic activity, is excellent in hydrogenation selectivity and thermal resistance, also excellent in storage stability and maintainability of catalytic activity and is hardly affected by the co-existing impurities.

    • This invention is an improvement upon the current process for the production of block copolymers, especially hydrogenated block copolymers, of conjugated dienes and/or vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons which comprises anionically polymerizing the monomers in an inert hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an alkali metal initiator whereby a polymer cement is produced and then contacting the cement with hydrogen under hydrogenation conditions in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. This invention and the improvement to the foregoing process comprises reducing the viscosity of the polymer cement by adding to it, preferably prior to hydrogenation (if the polymer is to be hydrogenated), from 2 to 50 % wt of a polar compound. The polar compound must be a poorer solvent for the block copolymer than is the inert hydrocarbon solvent. Preferred polar compounds include diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, diethoxyethane, monoglyme, diglyme, diethoxypropane, dioxane ortho-dimethoxybenzene, and the like.
