    • An adhesive label is produced by a process that includes the steps of providing a web consisting of an adhesive label substrate having a face material, an adhesive layer and a liner. The web has a web width and a web direction and a plurality of non-adhesive strips positioned between adhesive portions in parallel alignment with the web direction. The web is positioned in a label conversion machine wherein the web is continuously pulled through the conversion machine in a preselected web direction. A plurality of labels are configured on the web wherein a first portion of each label overlays a non-adhesive strip and a second portion of each label overlays an adhesive portion. The labels are cut on the web and printed with indicia used in food safety labeling systems. The labels are then further processed into individual rolled strips for use in food safety labeling systems wherein the back surface of each label has a first non-adhesive portion and a second adhesive portion.

    • The invention is directed to a method for transferring an integrated-circuit element from a source substrate to a predetermined position on a target substrate. A source substrate with an integrated-circuit element on it and an element transfer holder with a layer of an adhesive material with a controllable adhesivity are provided. The element transfer holder is lowered onto the integrated-circuit element whereby the adhesivity has a first value suited to hold the integrated-circuit element to the element transfer holder. Then the integrated-circuit element is released from the source substrate and the element transfer holder with the integrated-circuit element attached to it is removed from the source substrate. The target substrate is provided with a droplet of a liquid arranged at the predetermined position and the element transfer holder is lowered with the integrated-circuit element attached to it onto the target substrate such that the integrated-circuit element gets into contact with the droplet. Then the adhesivity of the adhesive material is set to a second value suited to release the integrated-circuit element from the element transfer holder whereby the droplet aligns the integrated-circuit element to the predetermined position. Finally the element transfer holder is removed from the integrated-circuit element.

    • Methods and apparatus for producing labels on continuous stock, by removing waste areas from the areas of the stock upon which the labels are printed. In one method, a layer of adhesive is applied over the unprinted label areas, the label areas are die cut, and a waste carrier is applied to the adhesive to remove the waste areas. In a second method, the stock is separated from its backing, exposing the adhesive, and a spot adhesive deadener is applied in a pattern corresponding to the waste areas. The backing layer is then reapplied to the stock, the labels are printed and die cut, and the waste area, no longer bound by the adhesive, is stripped off. The methods are implemented by a flexographing printing and converting machine.

    • A plurality of two-ply labels in sheet form include base and top layers on a single backing sheet with a release surface to which the transparent base layer is adhered with a transparent pressure sensitive adhesive. The top layer is unprinted paper releasably adhered to the upper side of the base layer by a dry residue adhesive. The top and base layers are cut to define a grid of printable labels and the sheets are of a size that can be fed through an inkjet or laser printer or copier. The adhesion between the base and top layers is less than the internal cohesion of the base and top layers and the adhesion of the pressure-sensitive adhesive. A user can print the labels and peel them from the backing sheet, apply them to a product or other substrate, and the top layer can then be peeled from the base layer leaving the transparent base layer adhered to the substrate with the separated top sheet and the exposed surface of the base layer substantially tack-free. A method of making and using such a label sheet is also disclosed.

    • Steel reinforced tire fabrics are cut with long rigid bar blades, circular disc blades sand disc and anvil blades. All of these blades may have an open relatively deep slot spaced close to the cutting edge that creates a resilient cantilevered spring element that includes the cutting edge. In response to cutting forces, the spring element will deflect and form a concave crossover area that improves cutting. A supporting material, particularly a precompressed supporting material, such as a precompressed or stretched polyurethane strip may be inserted into the slot. The supporting material limits or reduces the deflection of the spring element so that the yield strength of the spring element is not exceeded and it returns to its original position when the forces are removed. A precompressed supporting material exerts an outward force on the spring element. A polyurethane strip may be precompressed by stretching it before it is inserted into the slot. Two overlapping blades are used to cut the tire fabric, one or both can have the resilient spring features. More than one slot may be provided in a blade so there is more than one spring element in one blade. The blades can be used to cut other materials.
