    • A cutting apparatus for cutting a material, such as leather, having a drum, a plurality of rollers, a cutter and a pair of belts. The drum includes a drum surfaces and rotates about an axis. The cutter has a cutting edge that is in contact with the drum surface and is oriented generally perpendicular to the axis. The rollers are arranged generally parallel to the axis and support the belts for rotation thereon. Each of the belts is disposed on an opposite side of the cutting edge and is positioned such that a portion of each belt extends about a corresponding portion of the drum surface forward of the cutting edge. The portion of the belts and the portion of the drum surface are positioned to frictionally co-engage the material and drive the material into contact with the cutting edge.

    • An automatic tube shearing system of the type requiring no shearing blades comprising an automatic two-stage tube feed mechanism and a bladeless shear. The feed mechanism comprises a tube loader, a pinch roller type initial drive, a selectively engageable main roller drive and an intermittent drive including a gripper which operates in a precision fashion to feed tube through the shear apparatus. The shear apparatus is of the type requiring tooling, both externally and internally of the tubing to prevent deformation during the bladeless shear operation. The internal tooling comprises a mandrel having a position stabilization rod extending along the tube end feed path and equipped with a pair of spaced apart latches which operate in a complemental fashion to permit tube lengths to be fed onto the mandrel rod and later fed through the shear without ever unlocking the stabilization rod and losing the proper positioning of the mandrel. A unique tube clamp and several methods of using the apparatus to provide substantially continuous tube feed are disclosed. A method of verifying the registration of the lead end of a tubular workpiece with a shear plane is disclosed.

    • Steel reinforced tire fabrics are cut with long rigid bar blades, circular disc blades sand disc and anvil blades. All of these blades may have an open relatively deep slot spaced close to the cutting edge that creates a resilient cantilevered spring element that includes the cutting edge. In response to cutting forces, the spring element will deflect and form a concave crossover area that improves cutting. A supporting material, particularly a precompressed supporting material, such as a precompressed or stretched polyurethane strip may be inserted into the slot. The supporting material limits or reduces the deflection of the spring element so that the yield strength of the spring element is not exceeded and it returns to its original position when the forces are removed. A precompressed supporting material exerts an outward force on the spring element. A polyurethane strip may be precompressed by stretching it before it is inserted into the slot. Two overlapping blades are used to cut the tire fabric, one or both can have the resilient spring features. More than one slot may be provided in a blade so there is more than one spring element in one blade. The blades can be used to cut other materials.
