    • A tool or machine in which the relative portion of two components is adjustable has setting means operable in a first mode to set the two components approximately to a desired setting and in a second mode to adjust the approximate setting accurately to a required setting. A tool for routing has a base plate (1) and a depth stop comprising a post (6) extending upwardly from the base plate, a first collar (8) movable along the post, a screw thread on the outer surface of the first collar, and a second collar (12) whose bore is screw-threaded screwed over the first collar. The post (6) includes a surface in the form of a toothed rack, the first collar has a bore one portion of whose surface is formed to engage one or more teeth (7) on the rack to lock the first collar (8) in a selected one of a number of predetermined positions along the post and a spring (11) resiliently biases the first collar into engagement with the toothed rack. A scale (14) operating with a fiducial mark is provided.

    • An air bearing supported rotary index table for machine tools is provided with an automatic table index locking mechanism which is operable to allow the table to be moved past undesired index positions and to be stopped and locked at a desired index position. The locking mechanism is provided with time delay controls which actuate it only in response to the presence of the table at a given index position for a predetermined minimum period of time. In use, discrimination between desired and undesired index positions is achieved by movement past undesired index positions, and very slow movement near the desired index position.

    • A machine tool includes a head which supports a vertically movable quill within which there is disposed a rotatable spindle to which various kinds of cutting tools may be attached. The spindle is driven through a mechanism which includes means for locking the spindle in a particular predetermined angular position, such locking means including a detent wheel engageable by a stop member that is operated by a fluid actuator that is partially under the control of a means that senses the angular position of the spindle. Within the quill there is provided a spring-biased annular piston for operating actuating means that are connected to clamping members for clamping onto and for releasing tooling from the spindle when it is in its locked position. When the spindle is to be stopped, power is removed from a spindle drive motor and is reversely applied to obtain dynamic braking, and when the motor is nearly stopped, that condition is sensed to terminate such dynamic braking. For each revolution of the spindle, a pulse is provided and also, a low level of power is reapplied to the drive motor to cause it to creep. The next signal pulse from the spindle is used to remove the low level power and to energize the spindle brake briefly after which the spindle locking means is energized to enable actuation of the annular piston.

    • This invention relates to a method and a device for handling of plane workpieces (2) when boring holes in two opposite ends (2A, 2B) of the workpieces (2), preferably parts for cabinets, to be provided with holes which should fit pegs for assembling purposes. By means of the invention it is facilitated to accomplish holes rationally in desired places on plane workpieces. The method according to the invention is attained in such a way that when the workpiece (2) in question is transported between stops (16,17) situated on each side of the workpiece (2) extending across the direction of transport when boring desired holes in the workpiece (2) in the region of said stops (16, 17).
