    • A novel seal arrangement is provided for use in processing apparatus of the type including a partition for separating zones of relatively high and low pressures. At least one aperture is provided in such partition, the aperture having a wall. A processing unit (such as a hydrocyclone) has a portion thereof located in such aperture so that an annular region is defined between such unit and the aperture wall. An annular seal of resiliently deformable material is located in this annular region and provides a seal between the above noted zones. This seal is of a cup-shaped form and includes an annular outer seal lip which is radially spaced from the processing unit. This seal outer lip is connected to the remainder of the seal via an end wall. The seat outer lip has inner and outer surfaces and a free annular edge remote 'from the end wall. This inner surface is exposed, in use, to the zone of higher pressure such that the outer surface of the seal lip sealingly engages the wall of the aperture under the influence of the differential pressures acting on it. The seal is located relative to the wall of the aperture and the wall of the aperture is of such dimension that the sealing engagement between the wall and the outer surface of the seal lip occurs in an annular sealing region located generally between and spaced from both the seal end wall and the free annular edge of the seal lip.

Outlet ducts (22) communicating with outlets in the hydrocyclone heads (21) are designed in that side of . the cover which faces the other cover plate (27). To permit rapid and tight clamping of block (10), cover (18) and cover plates (24, 27) during operation, at least one cover plate (27) has a hydraulic device in the form of a pressure plate (30) disposed in a recess (28) in the flat side facing the cover (18) and the central block (10), respectively, and can be pressed against the cover or the block by means of a hydraulic fluid which is supplied to the space (31) between the bottom of the recess (28) and the side of the plate (30) facing the bottom.

    • Plurality of hydrocyclones (10) for cleaning liquid suspensions are combined to form uniform packages (80), each of which comprises, for example, ten hydrocyclones. The central part of each cyclone package is made up of a double chamber, one part of which is intended for the supply of the inject, i.e. the phase of the suspension which is to be cleaned, while the other part is intended for the removal of the cleaned phase, or accept. The double chamber preferably consists of a pair of twin conduits (65, 70), that is to say, two collecting conduits disposed tightly adjacent and parallel with each other, for receiving and delivering the respective suspension phases from the cyclones. The cyclones (10) are designed to be connected to the twin conduits via leak-tight pipe connections of the sleeve type, such as those known as chevron couplings (50), for example. This means that each separate cyclone (10) can be pushed plug-fashion into its position in the package (80) and at the same time can be connected leak-tightly to the twin conduits (65, 70). To do this, the cyclones are manipulated by their reject end, i.e. the end where the suspension phase in which impurities are entrained emerges, preferably through a transparent glass unit (40) so that the appearance of the stream of reject in the package can be observed. A plurality of such cyclone packages (80) may be assembled together in various configurations to form larger hydrocyclone batteries.

    • Hydrocyclone separator apparatus includes hydrocyclone separator(s) capable of separating light impurities from a paper-making fibre slurry. The separator inner wall is cylindrical with an apertured inlet portion adjacent one end which directs feed slurry in a vortical path along the wall to an enlarged inlet to an axial flow passage adjacent the other end. This inlet has a rim spaced radially from the wall which skims an inner part from the vortex containing predominantly the light impurities into the axial passage from which it is discharged through an apertured outlet portion of the sidewall. The remainder of the slurry vortex passes the rim to be discharged through another apertured outlet portion of the sidewall. The described apparatus also includes manifold structure providing three manifolds having parallel sidewalls with seal-lined openings through which the separator(s) may be endwise inserted to or withdrawn from operative position in which the inlet and outlets thereof are associated with respective manifolds. The outer wall of the separator(s) is reduced in diameter for at least substantially half the length thereof to facilitate separator manipulation and reduce seal wear. One manifold is spaced from the other two by at least substantially half of the separator length to expose the body portion of the separator(s) for hand manipulation.

    • A special form of fiuid cyclone in which the velocity energy in the exit fluid is converted into exit pressure thus permitting the device to discharge to atmospheric pressure or a higher pressure while a vacuum may exists in the central core of the vortex. The result is achieved by use of a curved passage at the exit which starts as a coaxial space and gradually expands and turns outward to become a circular space between two disks. The removal of reject material to atmospheric pressure with a vacuum at the core may be achieved by limiting the restriction In cross-section of the bottom core such that the pressure is atmospheric and allow it to leave through a space between the end of the cone and a blunt shaped surface. The above special form of fluid cyclone operates particularly well, because of reduced energy losses, when employed in a multiple arrangement in which the tangential velocity energy of fluid entering the barrel of the individual cyclone units is created by fluid flowing at larger radius such as to create a pattern of multiple vortex flow. The vortices are in a chamber providing a common inlet to a plurality of cyclone units whith the vortices centering on the individual units. The special arrangement of fluid cyclones is in a geometry similar to that of a vortex trail with an even number of units of opposing vortex direction. The same type of arrangement; i.e. having all of the units discharge into a common chamber, leads to further energy recovery in fluid leaving the fluid cyclones.
