摘要： Sialic acid binding proteins, sialic acid-binding peptides and sialic acid containing oligo-saccharides are active ingredients of a novel bacterial enterotoxin neutralizer and interfere with the binding of enterotoxins, including cholera toxin, to receptors so as to exert an effect of neutralizing the toxicity, thus being utilized as an effective neutralizer and are safe and available cheaply and abundantly from by-products produced during the processing of cow's milk which renders the enterotoxin neutralizer economically advantageous for commercial use.

摘要： A rotary column is rotatably mounted on a hollow shaft having orifices and the shaft is journaled in a reaction vessel. The rotary column has an outer net around the shaft and a space defined by this outer net within the rotary column is divided by partition plates provided with many through-holes into several compartments to be loaded with carriers and immobilized enzymes. The reaction vessel is provided radially outside the compartments with a top cover so that carriers and immobilized enzymes may be easily and evenly loaded into the rotary column. An end surface of the rotary column that is remote from the drive mechanism is provided with a lateral cover. There are provided hydraulic cylinders to tilt the rotary column. Within the reaction vessel, the outer net of the rotary column is provided with rollers adjacent to the lateral cover. Furthermore, there is provided a deaerating pipe within the rotary column and the orifices of the hollow shaft are so dimensioned that, nearer a solution outlet, the diameters of the orifices are larger.

摘要： Disclosed herein is an infection protectant which is excellent in infection protective effects and is also safe. .kappa.-Casein, a sialic-acid-conjugated protein derived from cow milk, and a glycomacropeptide derived from .kappa.-casein, each of which is useful as an active ingredient in this invention, have been found to be effective for the prevention of adhesion of E. coli on cells and also for the inhibition of transformation of lymphocytes by EBV and also to have strong HI activity against virus. The infection protectant of this invention is hence believed to exhibit marked effects for the prevention of occurrence of infectious diarrhea, for mass protection against spreading of influenza, and also against canceration of lymphocytes. Since the active ingredient of the infection protectant is a substance derived from cow milk, it is free of any problem from the viewpoint of safety. Moreover, it is absolutely tasteless and odorless. It can therefore be added to foods for its application.

The production of high-purity .kappa.-casein GMP is realized by using an effluent of rennet-casein curd free of whey proteins, lactose and the like as a starting effluent, adjusting the pH of the effluent to an acidic range to remove calcium phosphate and then subjecting the resulting effluent to a desalting treatment. .kappa.-Casein GMP is used as a standard substance for the assay of sialic acid. It has also attracted attention for its physiological activities and other properties.

摘要： The invention relates to compositions and methods for inhibiting infection or suppressing growth of human immunodeficiency virus. The composition comprises, as an effective component, an iron-binding protein (e.g., lactoferrin, transferrin, ovotransferrin), a chemically modified compound of the iron-binding protein, or a hydrolyzed compound of the iron-binding protein. The effective components are safe and can be easily prepared from inexpensive raw materials. The composition can be orally administered, injected or applied to the skin, eye, ear, nose or used as a preparation for vagina affusion, mouth washing or suppositories, and can effectively inhibit infection or suppress growth of human immunodeficiency virus.
