摘要： The invention relates to a fluoro-substituted alkenyl compound represented by formula (1) wherein Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 are each independently H or F, provided that at least one of Y1 and Y2 is F; Q1 is a single bond or an alkylene group of 1-20 carbon atoms, at least one —CH2— being optionally substituted by —O—, provided that two or more —O— are not adjacent to each other; Q2 is a single bond or —C≡C—; Rings A1, A2 and A3 are each independently a cyclohexane ring, a dioxane ring, a cyclohexene ring, a pyrimidine ring, a pyridine ring, or a benzene ring, or a benzene ring having at least one hydrogen atom substituted by F; Z1, Z2 and Z3 are each independently a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —COO—, —OCO—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CF2O—, or —OCF2; and m and n are each independently 0 or 1; provided that Y3 is F when Ring A3 is a cyclohexane ring and Z3 is a single bond. The liquid crystal composition comprising the compound, when used in liquid crystal display elements for various modes, excels in driving voltage and contrast.

The crystalline compounds are ester compounds expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R1 represents e.g. a hydrogen atom; A1 to A5 each independently represent e.g. 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl, 3-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl, 1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene, or 4-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene; bonding groups Za to Zd each independently represent e.g. a single bond, —CH2—, —O—, —C≡C—, or an alkylene group or alkenylene group having 2 to 4 carbon; bonding group Ze represents e.g. a single bond, an alkylene group or alkenylene group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; n1 to n3 are each independently 0 or 1, but n1≦n2≦n3; Y1 and Y2 each independently represent oxygen atom or sulfur atom; R2 represents e.g. a halogen atom, a straight chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or straight chain or branched alkenyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms; provided that when A5 represents unsubstituted 1,4-phenylene, then Zd is a single bond, and A4 is not 1,4-phenylene; and each atom which constitutes this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

摘要： Liquid crystalline compounds having a comparatively high voltage holding ratio, high &Dgr;n and high &Dgr;&egr;, and excellent miscibility with known liquid crystalline compounds at low temperatures. The novel compounds have the formula (1) wherein R represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; n1 and n2 are independently 0, 1, or 2 provided that the sum of n1 and n2 is 1 or 2; ring A and ring B independently represent 1,4-phenylene, fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a) in the specification or 1,4-cyclohexylene provided that at least one of ring A and ring B is fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a); Za, Zb, and Zc independently represent single bond, —CH2CH2—, —COO—, —CF2O—, or —CH2CH2CH2CH2—; Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or methyl group provided that when at least one of Za, Zb, and Zc is —CH2CH2—, then Q2 is fluorine atom, and that when Za, Zb, and Zc are all single bonds, then Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom or fluorine atom; Y represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a halogenated alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and each atom constituting this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

摘要： There is provided an electrically and chemically stable liquid crystalline compound which exhibits a significantly large value of De and a high voltage holding ratio. The compound is a phenyldioxane derivative represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R represents a C1-C20 alkyl group; each of n1 and n2 represents 0 or 1; each of Q.sub.1 through Q.sub.6 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, or a chlorine atom, provided that Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 0, and that at least one of Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 1; each of Za and Zb represents a single bond, --COO--, or --CF.sub.2 O--; Zc represents a single bond or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a C1-C5 halogenated alkyl group in which one or more non-adjacent methylene groups may be replaced by oxygen atoms or sulfur atoms; and each of the elements that constitute the compound may comprise isotopes of the element. The compound also exhibits excellent compatibility with previously known liquid crystalline compounds, and is advantageously used for low voltage driving of liquid crystal displays for TFTs. There are also provided liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound, as well as liquid crystal display elements constructed of the compositions.

Disclosed are liquid crystal compositions containing, as a first component, at least one compound expressed by general formula either (I-1) or (I-2), and containing, as a second component, at least one compound expressed by any one of general formulas (II-1) to (II-7) ##STR1## wherein n is an integer of 1 to 10, Z.sup.1 represents --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 -- or single bond, X represents F or OCF.sub.3, Y represents H or F, and m is 0 or 1. The liquid crystal compositions of the present invention are useful as liquid crystal material for low voltage in several modes such as active matrix mode and STN mode.

摘要： In order to provide novel compounds which are useful as liquid crystal materials for low voltages in several liquid crystal displays, have a large dielectric anisotropy, and are low in viscosity; and to improve characteristics of liquid crystal compositions, difluorooxymethane derivatives expressed by the following general formula (I) and liquid crystal compositions containing the compound are proposed ##STR1## wherein each of l, m, and n is 0 or 1, rings A.sub.1 to A.sub.3 independently represent six-membered rings such as trans-1,4-cyclohexylene and 1,4-phenylene, Z.sub.1 to Z.sub.3 independently represent a bonding group such as covalent bond and --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, L.sub.1 to L.sub.4 independently represent hydrogen atom or halogen atom, and X represents a group such as halogen atom and OCF3.They are useful as liquid crystal materials for low voltages in several modes such as active matrix mode and STN mode.
