摘要： Liquid crystalline compounds having a comparatively high voltage holding ratio, high &Dgr;n and high &Dgr;&egr;, and excellent miscibility with known liquid crystalline compounds at low temperatures. The novel compounds have the formula (1) wherein R represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; n1 and n2 are independently 0, 1, or 2 provided that the sum of n1 and n2 is 1 or 2; ring A and ring B independently represent 1,4-phenylene, fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a) in the specification or 1,4-cyclohexylene provided that at least one of ring A and ring B is fluorine substituted 1,4-phenylene expressed by the formula (a); Za, Zb, and Zc independently represent single bond, —CH2CH2—, —COO—, —CF2O—, or —CH2CH2CH2CH2—; Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or methyl group provided that when at least one of Za, Zb, and Zc is —CH2CH2—, then Q2 is fluorine atom, and that when Za, Zb, and Zc are all single bonds, then Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q7 independently represent hydrogen atom or fluorine atom; Y represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a halogenated alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and each atom constituting this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

摘要： There is provided an electrically and chemically stable liquid crystalline compound which exhibits a significantly large value of De and a high voltage holding ratio. The compound is a phenyldioxane derivative represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R represents a C1-C20 alkyl group; each of n1 and n2 represents 0 or 1; each of Q.sub.1 through Q.sub.6 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, or a chlorine atom, provided that Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 0, and that at least one of Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.3 is a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom when n2 is 1; each of Za and Zb represents a single bond, --COO--, or --CF.sub.2 O--; Zc represents a single bond or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a C1-C5 halogenated alkyl group in which one or more non-adjacent methylene groups may be replaced by oxygen atoms or sulfur atoms; and each of the elements that constitute the compound may comprise isotopes of the element. The compound also exhibits excellent compatibility with previously known liquid crystalline compounds, and is advantageously used for low voltage driving of liquid crystal displays for TFTs. There are also provided liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound, as well as liquid crystal display elements constructed of the compositions.

摘要： The present invention provides liquid crystalline compounds having a high voltage holding ratio and a low threshold voltage, little variation of these properties with temperature change, high &Dgr;n, and good compatibility with other liquid crystal materials particularly under a low temperature; liquid crystal compositions containing these crystalline compounds; and liquid crystal display devices made using these liquid crystal compositions. The liquid crystalline compounds are terphenyl derivatives represented by general formula (1): wherein R represents a straight or branched alkyl group of 1-20 carbon atoms, and any methylene groups (—CH2—) not adjacent each other in each alkyl group may be replaced by oxygen atoms; X is a halogen atom, —OCF3, —OCF2H, —CF3, —CF2H or —CFH2; Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 independently represents H or F, but at least two of Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 represent F; and any atom constituting these compounds may be substituted by its isotope.
