The panel (40) has layers including a scrim layer (68). The scrim layer (68) has an edge (98) defining a boundary (110) between first and second portions (42,44) of the panel (40) which have first and second shear strengths, respectively. The scrim layer (68) imparts a difference between the first and second shear strengths such that the panel (40) is rupturable along the boundary (110) under the influence of the air bag (14) as a result of the difference in shear strengths.

    • A cover assembly (40) includes a deployment door (60) which covers a deployment opening (26) in an air bag module (10). A retainer assembly (70) connected with the deployment door (60) has an engaged condition blocking movement of the deployment door from a closed position to an open position. The retainer assembly (70) is moved to a disengaged condition when the deployment door (60) is opened by the inflating air bag (22). When it is in the disengaged condition, the retainer assembly (70) can not be returned to the engaged condition, and the deployment door (60) can not be returned to the closed position.

    • Described is a closure capable of opening by expansion of an occupant restraint cushion in a recessed area of an interior vehicle trim comprising a first molded layer comprised of a mixture of a polypropylene composition and a thermoplastic elastomer composition; a second layer integrally molded with and on one side of the first layer covering the recess for the restraint cushion and comprised of a mixture of a polypropylene and a thermoplastic elastomer. The first layer has a frangible reduced thickness area on the opposite side of the second layer which area breaks upon exit of the restraint cushion within the closure. The second layer has a Shore A hardness and is softer than the first layer and is capable of bending upon exiting of the bag in a bending or compressing area near the frangible reduced thickness area of the first layer.

    • Apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle (12) that has a side structure (16) and a roof (18) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14). The inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) is inflatable away from the vehicle roof (18) into a position between the side structure (16) of the vehicle (12) and a vehicle occupant. The apparatus (10) also includes a housing (26) for storing the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) in a stored position extending along the vehicle side structure (16) adjacent the vehicle roof (18). The housing (26) includes a portion that forms an interior trim piece (190) of the vehicle (12). The apparatus (10) also includes at least one grab handle (34) and at least one connector (200) that extends through the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14), the housing (26) and the grab handle. The connector (200) connects the inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14), housing (26) and grab handle (34) to the vehicle (12).
