    • New, highly effective cationic sizing agents for paper have been provided. They can be obtained by a method in which a water-soluble cationic chemically pure terpolymer compound consisting of(a) 7-40% by weight of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and/or methacrylate,(b) 40-80% by weight of styrene and(c) 4-40% by weight of acrylonitrileis dissolved in an aqueous medium, the sum of the components (a) to (c) always being 100% by weight and at least 10% of the N,N-dimethylamino groups of the terpolymer being quaternized and the remainder being protonated, and, in the presence of 10 to 70% by weight, relative to the monomer mixture below, of this emulsifier,(d) 0 to 90% by weight of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile,(e) 5 to 95% by weight of styrene and(f) 5 to 95% by weight of acrylates and/or methacrylates having 1 to 12 C atoms in the alcohol radical,the sum of the components (d) to (f) always being 100% by weight, are emulsified, and the emulsion thus obtained is subjected to free radical-initiated emulsion polymerization at temperatures from 20.degree. to 150.degree. C.

    • Cationic sizing agents for paper, obtainable by a process in which a water-soluble cationic terpolymer compound, built up in a chemically uniform manner, of (a) 7 to 40% by weight of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and/or methacrylate, (b) 40 to 80% by weight of styrene and (c) 4 to 50% by weight of acrylonitrile, the sum of components (a) to (c) always being 100% by weight and at least 10% of the dimethylamino groups of the terpolymer being quaternized with monoepoxides, with the exception of epihalogenohydrins, and the remainder being protonated, is dissolved in an aqueous medium and, in the presence of 10 to 70% by weight--based on the following monomer mixture--of this emulsifier, (d) 5 to 95% by weight of acrylonitrile, meth-acrylonitrile or styrene or mixtures thereof and (e) 5 to 95% by weight of acrylic acid ester and/or methacrylic acid ester with 1 to 12 C atoms in the alcohol radical--the sum of components (d) and (e) always being 100% by weight--are emulsified and the emulsion thus obtained is subjected to emulsion polymerization, initiated by free radicals, at temperatures of 20.degree. to 150.degree. C.

    • Paper sizing agents in the form of an aqueous preparation of maleic acid anhydride copolymers of which the anhydride groups had been reacted either with organic or inorganic bases or with primary-tertiary diamines and the reaction products subsequently reacted with epichlorohydrin or with inorganic or organic acids to form salts, the copolymers being made up of polymerised units of(a) from 5 to 75%, by weight, of an aromatic vinyl compound;(b) from 10 to 75%, by weight, of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl esters;(c) from 5 to 35%, by weight, of maleic acid anhydride;(d) from 0 to 25%, by weight, of other vinyl monomers; and(e) from 0.1 to 10%, by weight, based on the sum of monomers (a) to (d) (which amounts to 100%, by weight), of an unsaturated aldehyde or of an enol ether derived therefrom.The copolymers are produced by radical polymerisation preferably in the absence of solvents.
