    • The aim of the liquid-crystal cell (7) is to combine the advantages of the known cells of the twisted nematic type and of the dynamic scattering type, and to avoid their disadvantages. Transparent electrodes (1, 2) are applied to parallel glass substrates (3, 4). Located between the electrodes (1, 2) is the liquid-crystal material (5) consisting of MBBA and EBBA with a mixing ratio by weight of 1:1. A silane is added for the purpose of parallel alignment of the molecules. Spacers (6) respectively on the upper and lower end of the electrodes (1, 2) also simultaneously serve the purpose of sealing. Polarizers (8, 9) are arranged in contact with the outer surfaces of the substrates (3, 4). A voltage source (11) is connected to the electrodes (1, 2). The liquid-crystal material employed has a negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid-crystal molecules in the vicinity of the second electrode (2) are arranged parallel to the second substrate (4), and the molecules in the vicinity of the first electrode (1) are arranged parallel to the first substrate (3), the angle theta between the directions of the molecules being between 10 DEG and 180 DEG . The polarization planes of the two polarizers (8, 9) enclose an angle of theta + 90 DEG with one another.

    • PURPOSE:To achieve the improvement in response speed and evenness of display by defining the angle that the molecular axes of liquid crystal and dyes and the normal of transparent electrodes assume to the specific range in the state where no voltage is applied. CONSTITUTION:Diagonal vapor deposition of electrodes is done on transparent electrodes, after which orientation treatment is applied so that the angle theta that the molecular axes of guest and host and the normal of the transparent electrodes 2 assume is 3-30 deg. when there is no applied voltage. The transparent glass substrates 1 are then parallel disposed at the specified spacing in such a manner that the surfaces of the transparent electrodes oppose to each other. The mixture of dichromatic dyes 5 and nematic liquid crystal 4 is put between these substrates and the assembly is sealed by a spacer 3. With this constitution, the molecular axes of guest and host remain stable not in the direction perpendicular to the glass substrates 1 but in a state inclined by the angle theta thereto where no voltage is applied and therefore the moving directions of the molecular axes of guest and host when voltage is applied coincide, as a result of which response speed increases and the even display free from variable densities is obtainable.

    • PURPOSE:To make possible color display of low voltage by arraying the nematic liquid crystal molecules containing dichromatic dyes to a twisted structure through either of application or removal of voltage and disposing a polarizer to either incident or exit side alone. CONSTITUTION:In the color display element making use of guest-host effect, nematic liquid crystal 5 of positive or negative dielectric anisotropy added with dichromatic dyes is put between glass plates 1, 4 provided with transparent electrodes 2, 3. In the case of positive liquid crystal, the electrodes 2, 3 whose surfaces have been friction treated are so combined that their directions become 90 deg.. In the case of negative liquid crystal, the electrodes 2, 3 having been coated with perpendicularly orientation treating agents are provided. In the case of the positive liquid crystal, the liquid crystal becomes colorless when applied with voltage and colors while not applied with voltage and this is reversed in the case of the negative liquid crystal. In addition, a polarizer 8 is disposed on either incident light 7 side or exit light 9 side alone in parallel to the axial direction of the liquid crystal molecules which become parallel to the electrode on that side. In this way, the low voltage operation of 2/3 to 1/2 that of ordinary ones is made possible.
