    • The aim of the liquid-crystal cell (7) is to combine the advantages of the known cells of the twisted nematic type and of the dynamic scattering type, and to avoid their disadvantages. Transparent electrodes (1, 2) are applied to parallel glass substrates (3, 4). Located between the electrodes (1, 2) is the liquid-crystal material (5) consisting of MBBA and EBBA with a mixing ratio by weight of 1:1. A silane is added for the purpose of parallel alignment of the molecules. Spacers (6) respectively on the upper and lower end of the electrodes (1, 2) also simultaneously serve the purpose of sealing. Polarizers (8, 9) are arranged in contact with the outer surfaces of the substrates (3, 4). A voltage source (11) is connected to the electrodes (1, 2). The liquid-crystal material employed has a negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid-crystal molecules in the vicinity of the second electrode (2) are arranged parallel to the second substrate (4), and the molecules in the vicinity of the first electrode (1) are arranged parallel to the first substrate (3), the angle theta between the directions of the molecules being between 10 DEG and 180 DEG . The polarization planes of the two polarizers (8, 9) enclose an angle of theta + 90 DEG with one another.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal color display device which abounds in the mass-producing property and whose display contrast is satisfactory, by providing plural pieces of pin holes on a color filter film, and joining a first layer and a second layer of a transparent electrode of a double structure through an opaque metallic film installed in this pin hole. CONSTITUTION:On a transparent substrate 1 for forming a liquid crystal cell, a transparent electrode 5 of a double structure is provided, and also, between them, a color filter film 6 is installed, and also, on the color filter film 6, plural pieces of pin holes 13 are formed. Transparent electrodes of the first layer 5a and the second layer 5b are joined electrically through an opaque metallic film installed in this pin hole 13. In such a way, a uniform driving voltage can be applied to the whole area of the liquid crystal cell, a color display whose display contrast is good is obtained, and also, since the opaque metallic film is provided, deterioration of the display contrast caused by a light leakage from the pin hole does not occur. Also, in case said electrode has been formed by an electrodeposition method, it is not dissolved in a photoetching liquid at the time of forming the transparent electrode of the second layer, and the mass-producing property can be improved.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the display of positive type by the use of guest-host type liquid crystals of positive dielectric antisotropy by subjecting the pattern electrode regions to horizontal orientation treatment and the other regions to vertical orientation treatment thereby forming the liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION:Horizontal orientation treatment films 3a, 3b are provided on the transparent pattern electrodes 3, 4 provided on transparent glass substrates 1, 2. On the other hand, vertical orientation treatment films 5, 6 are formed on the substrates 1, 2 other than the above-mentioned pattern electrodes 3, 4 and both substrates 1, 2 are opposed by way of spacers 7, 8, into which guest-host type liquid crystals 9 are sealed to provided the display device. In the above-mentioned device, the liquid crystals existing between the patterns electrodes 3, 4 orient vertically with respect to the substrates 1, 2 together with dichromatic dyes (the entire region of the display surface becomes evenly colorless) when an electrical field is applied between the electrodes 3 and 4, and when the electrical field application is stopped, the liquid crystals orient horizontally with respect to the substrates 1, 2 (the display surface becomes color display with colorless background).
