    • A rotating clutch has a feed passage that is maintained at a predetermined pressure by a backfill control valve during periods of clutch disengagement when the clutch apply chamber is not pressurized. The valve is slidably disposed in a stationary housing in fluid communication between a pressure source and the apply chamber of the clutch. When the pressure source is reduced below a predetermined level, the valve is positioned to prevent the pressure in the passage from decreasing below the predetermined level while exhausting the clutch apply chamber. When clutch actuation is desired, the pressure source increases to open the backfill valve. With the valve opened by pressure, the fluid pressure is supplied to the clutch apply chamber thereby applying the clutch. The valve is positioned in the housing to admit pressurized fluid from the source to the clutch apply chamber while disconnecting the apply chamber from exhaust when clutch apply is required.

    • A control for a multi-speed transmission has a multiple gain trim valve that controls the engagement pressure rise in a selectively engageable torque transmitting mechanism. The trim valve has a valve spool and a plug valve longitudinally aligned in a valve bore such that four separate areas are present. One of the areas has the engagement pressure of the torque transmitting mechanism imposed thereon. Another of the areas has a control pressure imposed thereon and the remaining two areas are subjected to the trim pressure. The gain rate between the trim pressure and the engagement pressure determines the rapidity with which the torque transmitting mechanism is engaged. The control pressure reduces the effect of the trim pressure to provide a low gain rate until the product of the trim pressure and one of the areas is equal to or greater than the product of the control pressure and the area on which it operates. By reducing the control pressure to a zero value, a maximum gain rate is attained at the trim valve.

    • A hydraulic control for a transmission has a main line regulator, a torque converter clutch relay valve and a torque converter clutch solenoid valve. During torque converter operation, the pressure regulator is subjected to a line pressure bias signal and supplies pressurized hydraulic fluid to a control system at a substantially constant pressure level. During torque converter clutch operation, the pressure regulator is subjected to an additional line pressure bias signal and a variable pressure bias signal from the torque converter clutch solenoid valve to provide a modulated pressure control whereby main pressure is varied proportionally with torque converter clutch apply pressure.

    • A system to control the operation of a vehicular transmission embodying the concepts of the present invention utilizes a controller, at least one pulse width modulation solenoid valve and a torque transfer device operatively controlled by each of the solenoid valves so as to regulate a transmission system. The controller operatively imposes not only a varying modulation frequency on each of the solenoid valves, but also a varying modulation duty cycle on each of the solenoid valves. The controller also operatively varies the modulation rate of said frequency and said duty cycle of the fluid pressure operating the plurality of torque transfer devices, thus controlling the operation of each solenoid valve such that it does not impose a torque spike on the operation of the transmission as each solenoid valve applies fluid pressure to the appropriate torque transfer device. Accordingly, the controller provides smooth and quiet operation of the transmission.
