    • A process for continuously producing a phase retarder film or sheet comprising continuously supplying a stretched thermoplastic resin film or sheet to a heating zone in parallel with the stretching direction of the film or sheet and heating the film or sheet to a temperature not lower than the glass transition temperature of the resin while applying pressure to the surface of the film or sheet passing through the heating zone, thereby continuously subjecting the film or sheet to thermal relaxation while suppressing the expansion of the film or sheet in a direction parallel to the surface of the film or sheet and perpendicular to the stretching axis. According to the present invention, a phase retarder film or sheet having a low angular dependence of retardation can be produced continuously. By using the phase retarder film(s) or sheet(s) thus obtained as optical compensator(s), the viewing angle characteristics of liquid crystal display devices can remarkably be improved.

    • There is provided a narrow tape used as a component for adjusting the size of the waste of slacks, a skirt and the like. The tape has a ground fabric in a tape shape knitted or woven and inlay yarn integrally held by threads composing the ground fabric. The inlay yarn is thicker than the threads composing the ground fabric. A part of the inlay yarn projects from one surface of the ground fabric to form a projection. The projection includes a plurality of parts extending along the width of the ground fabric, and the parts are arranged with predetermined spacing along the length of the ground fabric to define recesses thereamong.

    • Disclosed is a method and apparatus for knitting patterns with a circular knitting machine provided with an annular array of knitting needles and groups of needle actuators. Pattern signals in binary notation are read out of a memory device and written into first one and then the other of a pair of counter stages. While pattern signals for a given course of knitting are being read out from one counter stage and forwarded to the corresponding actuators, pattern signals for the next course of knitting are written into the other counter stage from the memory device. The pattern signals alternately read out from first one and then the other counter stage are forwarded to the corresponding actuators by means of selection circuits to thereby produce a knit fabric having a continuous colored pattern.
