    • Sensors mounted on vehicles (e.g., buses, taxis, police cars) and public personnel (e.g., policemen) are used to monitor various conditions and situations such as air quality, potential biological and chemical attacks, and road and traffic conditions. The invention improves upon the typical approach that deploys fixed sensors at every geographical position of interest. The total number of required sensors and the size and the complexity of the network infrastructure required to connect the sensors are reduced and simplified. A method for estimating the number of mobile sensors required to cover a region of interest also is disclosed. A relatively small number of mobile sensors may be sufficient to cover a large area at a lower cost and less complexity than a fixed sensor network.

    • A balance charging detector is configured to detect a balance charging condition for a battery. The balance charging detector includes a controller and a comparing module. The controller is configured to monitor a status of the battery, access battery parameters for the battery that correspond to the status, and generate a group of balance charging parameters based on the battery parameters. The comparing module is configured to set a balance charging flag based on a comparison of the group of balance charging parameters and a set of thresholds. A balance charging signal can be generated if the balance charging flag is set to indicate presence of a condition to perform a balance charging of the battery.

    • Embodiments in accordance with the present invention provide a method for transmitting a data frame between a battery management system (BMS) and an associated device. The battery management system is coupled to an associated device via a one-wire bi-directional communication line. The method includes obtaining a control right of the one-wire bi-directional communication line and determining a target device based on a frame header by sending the frame header of a data frame by a source device; sending a specific data byte of the data frame from the source device to the target device; checking whether an acknowledge character from the target device is received by the source device within a predetermined time period; and releasing the control right of the one-wire bi-directional communication line if the acknowledge character is received within the predetermined time period by the source device or otherwise resending the data frame.

    • A method of constructing an image reader module and the image reader are described. The image reader module includes two or more circuit boards in a stacked configuration. Corresponding notches for receiving supports are formed along adjacent edges of the boards, which also have electrical contact points at the edges of each board connected to circuits on the boards. The supports are mounted in the notches between the two or more circuit boards to structurally interconnect the boards. Each of the supports, which may be flex cables or conductive bus bars, have one or more electrical conductors that are electrically connected to the contact points on the boards to electrically interconnect the boards, whereby the connections between the electrical conductors and the contact points form test points for the module. The notches may be substantially rectangular to receive the flex cable or may be slots to receive a bus bar. One end of the structural support flex cable or bus bar may be flush with one of the circuit boards and the other end of the structural support may extend past another one of the circuit boards. The supports may be soldered to the edges of the boards within the notches, which may be initially plated. In the image reader module an image sensor may be located on one of the circuit boards and an illumination assembly may be located on another of the circuit boards.
