    • Three types of novel hydrogen-absorbing alloy electrodes A, B and C usable for metal hydride secondary batteries are provided. All three types are represented by the general formula AB.sub.x wherein A represents Ti or elements that principally comprise Ti and generate heat upon absorption of hydrogen, B represents Mo and Ni or elements that principally comprise Mo and Ni and absorb heat upon absorption of hydrogen and 0.5.ltoreq.X.ltoreq.2, and are readily producible and difficult to undergo cycle deterioration and need only short activation treatment time. (A) uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy obtained by quenching and solidifying an alloy melt under an atmosphere of a reducing gas containing hydrogen at a cooling rate of at least 1.times.10.sup.3 .degree. C./sec and having on the surface thereof a hydride layer; (B) uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy having a composite phase structure comprising a main phase and a subphase, the average areal ratio of said subphase to said main phase in any cross-section of said alloy being 5 to 20%; and (C) uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy having a composite structure comprising a main phase and subphase, said main phase comprising crystallites having a major axis length (a) of 0.8 to 6 .mu.m and a ratio of the major axis length (a) to minor axis ratio (b), a/b, of not more than 3.

    • A stick lever unit is provided that is capable of eliminating uncomfortable feeling during manipulation of the stick, as well as, minimizing breaking of a wiring conductor of the variable resistor. The stick lever unit includes a fixing member, a first variable resistor attached to the fixing member, a first rotational member rotatably journalled to the fixing member, for rotationally controlling the first variable resistor, a second variable resistor attached to the first rotational member, and a second rotational member having a stick lever and being rotationally journalled to the first rotational member to rotationally control the second variable resistor. The wiring conductors of the second variable resistor are derived out from the lead-out hole in the rotational shaft of the first rotational member, which is attached to the second variable resistor.

    • Molten steel is efficiently vacuum treated in a vacuum treatment vessel provided with a top blow lance capable of injecting oxygen and a gaseous fuel at desired flow rates, respectively, into the molten steel. The blow lance is provided on the top of the vacuum treatment vessel and is supported so as to be freely vertically movable. By spacing the lower end of the top blow lance not more than 2 m from the surface of the molten steel bath and injecting only oxygen onto the molten steel, and spacing the lower end of the top blow lance 1.0 m or more from the surface of the molten steel bath and injecting both oxygen and a gaseous fuel gas onto the molten steel, the temperature of the molten steel is prevented from decreasing during the vacuum treatment and the molten steel is so prevented from depositing on the inside wall of the vacuum treatment vessel. The top blow lance includes an oxygen injection section having a throat and a tapered portion connected to the lower end of the throat, and a plurality of fuel gas supply ports provided in the tapered portion. The throat and tapered portion are coaxial with the axial center line of the lance.
