    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earth removal device of an upward shield machine capable of controlling earth pressure at a face by evenly inflating an elastic film type valve within an earth removal pipe. SOLUTION: The earth removal device includes the earth removal pipe 19 positioned vertically for discharging downwards the sediment dug by the upward shield machine 1 which digs upwards; the elastic film type valve 20 provided in the earth removal pipe 19 for opening and closing the inside of the earth removal pipe 19 by being radially inflated and deflated by fluid pressure; and a gate mechanism 21 provided in the portion of the earth removal pipe 19 closer to an exit than to the elastic film type valve 20 for regulating a cross-sectional area within the earth removal pipe 19 through which the sediment passes. The cross-sectional area on the exit side of the elastic film type valve 20 through which the sediment passes is reduced by the gate mechanism 21 to rather clog the inside of the pipe and increase its earth pressure while making the earth pressure on the exit side approximately equal to the earth pressure on the entrance side. Thus, the elastic film type valve 20 is entirely and approximately uniformly acted upon by the earth pressure and approximately uniformly inflated, so that the entire valve 20 reduces the cross-sectional area.
