    • In order to better control and restrict handover, particularly when a mobile communications network includes unlicensed radio access networks there are proposed a modified unlicensed radio access network, an modified access controller, a modified switching node and a modified mobile station. The unlicensed radio access network includes an access network controller that is adapted to communicate with the core network portion of a licensed mobile communication network and is connected to a plurality of access points. The access controller is adapted to exchange messages with mobile stations communicating via an unlicensed radio interface with the access points. The access network includes a database arranged to be accessible by the access controller and containing information identifying each access point and information associated with each access point defining criteria for handover from the access point. The defining and storing of criteria that is specific for each access point means that the ease with which handover occurs can be adapted to the particular use and location of each access point.

    • An unlicensed-radio access network connects a mobile station to a conventional cellular core network. The unlicensed-radio access network includes an access controller (30) connected to the core network portion and a plurality of access points (20) connected to the access controller via a broadband packet-switched network. Each access point supports an unlicensed-radio interface permitting communication between mobile stations (10) and the access controller. Both the mobile station and the access controller comprises a first link control module (15, 35) for relaying or generating packet service frames and a second transport protocol module (13, 33). In accordance with the present invention a third, link control module (14, 34) is arranged between the first and second modules for receiving packet service frames from the first link control module, determining a transmission priority assigned to each packet frame and forwarding the packet service frames to the first transport protocol module in an order corresponding to the assigned transmission priority.

    • An unlicensed radio access network controller is proposed that is adapted to communicate with the core network portion of at least one public licensed mobile communication network. The provision of a connection with several mobile service switching nodes for routing traffic to and from mobile station connected to the unlicensed radio access network enables the access controller to better distribute traffic over the core network, so improving its efficiency.

    • The present invention relates to an improved location process for determining the location of mobile stations when a GSM network is extended by other access networks, for example unlicensed radio access networks. An access network controller supporting a connection with the mobile station sends a location service entity a location request that includes information indicative of at least one positioning method supported by the network element for a particular mobile station. By providing the location service entities with information on the location methods to use, there is no need to configure the location service entities with this information in advance. Moreover, the process is flexible and can be tailored to the network element making the request and thus to the type of connection actually used by the mobile station. There is no need for the location entities to launch several location methods before retrieving sufficiently accurate information since the most suitable methods are communicated in advance.

    • When certain types of data, such as voice data, is sent over an IP-based network a problem can occur if this data passes a network address translator NAT, which is unable to identify and translate address information contained in the payload portion of a message. Voice-over-IP requires the initial establishment of a connection including the signalling of the address information for receipt of voice data. In accordance with the invention, a node (60) connected to a public network (50) is adapted to determine when address information received from a second node (10) in the payload portion of a voice-path-establishment message is different from the source address in the header of a voice packet received subsequently from the second node. A difference indicates that a NAT function is operating and the node (60) sends voice packets to the address identified in the voice packet header rather to that identified in the earlier message.
