    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston-cylinder unit which is constituted simply, but nevertheless lockable or releasable from a lockup, according to need only when required. SOLUTION: The piston-cylinder unit comprises a lockup pipe 5 surrounding a cylinder device 1. A first end region 6 of the lockup pipe 5 is rotatably supported between a lockup-releasing position coaxial with the piston rod 3 in the free-end region of the piston rod 3 and a lockup-position longitudinally tilted relative to the piston rod. A support stopper 20 is placed in a second end region 7 of the lockup pipe. In the piston-cylinder unit, the lockup pipe 5 is rotatable in the lockup position when the piston rod 3 is at an outwardly protruding position, and at the same time the support stopper 20 is capable of axially butting against the end face of the cylinder, the lockup state of the lockup pipe 5 can be held at the lockup position by operable holding devices 17, 18, 19, and 23 respectively.
