    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston-cylinder unit which is constituted simply, but nevertheless lockable or releasable from a lockup, according to need only when required. SOLUTION: The piston-cylinder unit comprises a lockup pipe 5 surrounding a cylinder device 1. A first end region 6 of the lockup pipe 5 is rotatably supported between a lockup-releasing position coaxial with the piston rod 3 in the free-end region of the piston rod 3 and a lockup-position longitudinally tilted relative to the piston rod. A support stopper 20 is placed in a second end region 7 of the lockup pipe. In the piston-cylinder unit, the lockup pipe 5 is rotatable in the lockup position when the piston rod 3 is at an outwardly protruding position, and at the same time the support stopper 20 is capable of axially butting against the end face of the cylinder, the lockup state of the lockup pipe 5 can be held at the lockup position by operable holding devices 17, 18, 19, and 23 respectively.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cushioning adjustment element capable of cushioning the movement of a piston rod before the rod reaches the final position in extension/retraction movement and capable of being simply manufactured and assembled.
      SOLUTION: The cushioning adjustment element includes a circular tube shaped housing consisting of two housing sections and filled with pressurized fluid, and a piston having an inner diameter applicable to the housing section is installed in each of the housing sections movably in the axial direction. The housing sections are each divided into two pressure spaces by the pistons. The end of the piston rod penetrating the housing to an opening end of the housing is connected with the first piston. The pistons are each provided with movement cushioning means in the two directions. The second piston is installed on the other end of the piston rod 15 where the first piston 15 is not installed, and can be moved to the direction opposite to the opening end 11 by the piston 15. A spring 33 is installed on the other side of the second piston 25 where the first piton 15 is not installed, and one end of the spring 33 is supported by the second piston 25, and the other end of the second piston 25 is supported by housing side sections 6, 34.
